93 3.0L timing belt adjustment problems plz help

I had to change the waterpump on my 93 voyager but when i removed the timing belt the camshaft sprockets moved out of alignment and when i realigned them after installing the waterpump i turned on the van and i heard a clicking noise from the engine which sounds like a piston or valve is hitting something.

At first i realigned the sprockets and crankshaft and placed the timing belt at the factory location but it did the clicking noise.

then i tried making double checking that the piston 1 was at TDC but when i turn the crank shaft so that it aligns with the distributor it never seems to get exactly to the 1st spark plug it only comes close to spark plug 2 when the crank shaft timing mark is at the engine block mark.

I want to know if someone can tell me the procedure staring from the distributor alignment and then the timing belt adjustment for proper placement and operation.I have a haynes manual but i really don't understand exactly what i'm supposed to do to fix this problem.

Also how do I make sure the camchaft sprockets are aligned?

I just remember ican't align the front camshaft sprocket with the distributor number one when the front sprocket is alinged with the timing mark the distributor points to spark plug number 2 instead of 1 which i hink it's supposed to do. What does the rear sprocket move? How do I know if the rear sprocket is aligned correctly?

By what i understand the rear and front sprocket shoudl work correctly if aligned with the factory marks. My only problem is I'm thinking that since teh distributor doesn't line up with the front sprocket i might have to adjust the distributor/rotor if so please let me know if this will fix my problem?

Thanks for any help I tried to be as detailed as possible and as to what i understand of this, I need to fix my car soon because it is my only vehicle.

Re: 93 3.0L timing belt adjustment problems plz help

I just did a complete rebuild on my 1990 Caravan.
After placing the timing belt, I had the same problem you mention. The distributor rotor would not align with the no 1 cylinder.
Guess what? It does not point to it when the timing is set right.! It points to the number 2, no precisely to the No 2 but closer to it than to No. 1.
If you did not pull out the distributor, don't worry.
Make sure the camshafts arrows align with the marks, the crankshaft sprocket with the mark on the oil pump. You should be fine. I went through that head scratching this week. Jose.

take a look at the bottom side of the dist. cap... you will be suprised to see what is there....
the terminals are cross wired under the cap.
