Weird stall Batery problem
I had my jeeped parked for about a month while i was on a trip, when i came home the batery was dead (which i though was odd since it's about one month old). I jumped it no problem though. however,The check engine light was on, but i wanted to get it charged up a bit. While i was driving, I could here the whine of the alternator through my system. I pulled up to a stop sign and the car just died and lost all power. since i was only 4 blocks away and home was downhill, i just pushed/coasted it home. I then tried jumping it again, it was getting a little bit of power(lights would come on), the car would turn over a little bit, but nothing. I bought a battery charger and charged it up. Put battery back in jeepm nothing. My battery terminals are also brand new so i know they work. I knew my alternator was on the way out because my system was pulling a lot off it. I checked all my fuses and they look fine.
My questions are: Do you think my battery shorted out? Can a dead alternator make it harder to jump? Am I missing something to check? Thanks for any help Ben |

Re: Weird stall Batery problem
All vehicles have a small draw on the battery when the key is off. This draw is to keep the computer memories alive and also are caused by other components so the dead battery after one month is really not to be unexpected.
The short drive you had is not enough to charge the dead battery and the alternator was supplying the current to run the vehicle. When you slowed down and the engine idled, the charge rate dropped below what was required to run it and it stalled. When the vehicle sits, the battery posts will develop a layer of corosion so clean them and make 'em shiney Some parts stores will test batteries and alternators for free. Might be a good idea to test them to know for sure. JD |
