Very cool.

However...I wouldn't do it unless I did win the lottery.

Think about this...that's a butt load of money to spend on JUST the engine of a turbo'd car. I don't really think it's all that worth it. I would rather just beef up the engine some for reliability's sake, ie SGP Racing's services...not as expensive but will still keep you from sweating too bad, and spend the rest on turbo upgrades and things of that nature which is REALLY what makes a turbo'd engine powerful.

If it were N/A, then hell yea...do all you can do to the engine internals and everything...go for it...it's all ya got! But on a turbo'd engine, that's kind of a waste/overkill because that's not really where you're getting your power.

All in all...pretty cool, though.

Re: Escort Racing VG34ET for you Z31 guys...

It would depend on what turbo you're running and all that goes along with that. If you have that unbelievable engine but are running a stock turbo, you're probably not gunna be doing much better than low 5 sec dashes to 60.

On the other hand...I can do a little beefing up to the internals, then spend the majority of my money on turbos, fuel upgrades, ignition upgrades, etc...all the stuff needed to support a big ass turbo. This would result in MUCH more power, similar reliability and would probably cost less...all assuming the turbo system is well planned and executed.

Quick sum up: I don't really see the point in spending tons of money on the engine when the main focus should be beefing up the turbo and all of it's systems because THIS is what makes your power.

Re: Escort Racing VG34ET for you Z31 guys...

the point most likely is to create an engine for track guys. people who only use their z31 for the track. and if thats all you use it for, then you want the best of everything.

Re: Escort Racing VG34ET for you Z31 guys...

Yea...but it all comes down to da flow...money...CASH...I'm not made of money, so I have to do this on a budget. An Escort Racing crate engine would be awesome though...maybe I'll win the lottery someday...

Re: Escort Racing VG34ET for you Z31 guys...

I think the point here is strengthening the engine so that it can handle higher power.. Sure the stock internals are good up to 500hp or so, but try to go far beyond that and you're going to have a metal and oil soup instead of an engine. Sure throwing a bigger turbo is going to give you more peak power, but you cant just throw a turbo on and boost it up to 28 psi without some major internal modifications.

Secondly, changing the turbo alone is going to get you a higher *peak* power. Changing cams and replacing engine internals with lighter components (less reciprocating, sprung and unsprung mass) you're going to increase the area under the power curve, resulting in a more even power distribution over the entire rpm range. Any fool can get a pissy little 2L engine, throw a big turbo on it and claim 400hp, but a 400hp VG30DETT with worked internals is going to perform a helluva lot better, due to the greater area under the torque/power curve.

In short, its a waste of money if you're going to get a turbo and push it to 400-500hp. But its going to be a necessary step to get more out of the engine.

cheers.
-Mike

Re: Re: Escort Racing VG34ET for you Z31 guys...

I'm not saying to slap a big turbo on a stock engine. You do have to do othr things as well...for reliability and for better performance. I just think the package in question went a bit overboard. It is an amazing engine...by far...I'm just saying that I could have an amazing engine as well...just without going that far.

Via...I'm takin you up on that...

I've been hiding in the shadows after Samhain got his moderatorship. Sometimes I get really pissed off at his spelling of 'Aussie' and go to write a big bitch post and then realise that he's a pretty cool bloke.

As for the 'z31 and a half' I keep on getting stuck on little bitch problems that dont go away. For example, I had my custom tuned length headers made up for the VG30DE (as the stock exhaust manifold wouldn't fit in my engine bay) but it doesn't leave any room at all for the oil filter bracket to bolt on.
I had to get a block of aluminium engineered to fit in and take the oil away to a remote filter, and even then I'm running into all sorts of problems getting the manifold to fit back on. I've taken this piece back to the engineer 4 times already.
The only thing that keeps me going is imagining what its going to sound like (and feel like) when its finished.

I'll take a photo of this oil adaptor when I get the chance for you all to see how twisted and hacked up it is.
