1998 Durango Starts , but will not stay running
I own a 98 Durango. About a week ago after church ended I came out to start my D and drive away. It started ok but after 5 scs it stalled, just quit running. Took it to the garage, towed, and it will not show any codes.
Approx. 2 months ago, it would not start at all after running just fine, had neighbor jump start it. Was fine unless I let it sit for a day, then it wouldn't start again. This happened a third time about a month later, even after it sat for days without being started. Had another neighbor come with industrial charger, showed nothing wrong with battery. But finally started but would not run unless i applied pressure to fuel peddal. Ran it up hill with high rpms at fast speed. Had no problems at all with it for 2 months, now this. Mechanic finds no codes listing anything wrong, alt fine, 49 lbs of fuel pressure. Plugs have been changed. Any one have a clue what might fix this. I did read other threads and the garage is ordering a new computer. He did try a new MAP mod, but nothing. Help please, hubby left for friends wife, I have 2 little ones at home and need my D back fast. |

Re: 1998 Durango Starts , but will not stay running
Hopefully it's the same thing that was wrong with our 98. It would start fine, but would not stay running unless I held in the gas pedal. My battery seemed fine, but I thought I'd slap in an old one I had laying in the garage. FIXED! It was the battery! It would start very easily and stay running all day as long as I held in the gas, but as soon as I released it, the truck would stall. It would be nice if you could try the same thing as I did with another battery, hopefully that's it. Let us know how it turns out

Thank You
Hi, Thanks for your post. The mechanic ordered a new computer. I don't know if he tried the new battery. If the new computer doesn't work. I sure hope Chrysler will take it back and that a new battery will fix the prob. Will post my results as soon as I hear from the mechanic.
Thanks a ton. |

Yes, It works now!
Just got my D back from the mechanic. Replaced computer. Runs now. But new problem is that the ABS and E Brake come on and stay on. Have read it may be a speed sensor or ABS sensor. Any comments welcome please.

did he program the VIN in the computer, you also have to set the pinion factor!

Re: 1998 Durango Starts , but will not stay running
Resetting the computer may help, check with the mechanic first though, but if you unplug the battery post for 30 seconds (or so) it will reset the computer....

Re: 1998 Durango Starts , but will not stay running
The mechanic couldn't put in the VIn......doesn't have the update on his thing a ma gig......will have to go to a dealer to have it done i guess........he also tried resetting the computer and that didn't work. Will wait to see if he gets the upgrade he needs. Thank you everyone for the replies, can't tell you how helpful it has been for me. I reallly appreciate all the comments. Thanks again.
