Anyone Replaced Their Windshield Yet?

A rock chip quickly turned into a 2' crack last weekend. Has anyone replaced their windshield yet and what did it cost?

I've never had to replace one, so I'd also like recommendations about good places to go in the Seattle area.

Thanks
Stu

I've replaced a few windshields, don't ask. But the price range will go from $100-175, I've seen. But unfortunately, that here in NYC. But it shouldn't be more than that. Depends on where you go.

Bummer!

TJ, you may want to check with your insurance company. I don't know who your carrier is but they may be able to save you some cash on the replacement. I know the State Farm agent we use has some kind of deal worked out with a local vendor. I had to replace the windshield in my Suburban, and it cost me something like $50.00.

Safelite - $215 in DC (and they had it delivered from the *dealer*.)

Now I have to replace my second one.

Fixed the windshield

Choose safe Lite Auto Glass. They came to my house yesterday (on a Saturday) and replaced it in my garage in a hour.

Cost = $250.

Question Xterra Windshield

I have had two windshields crack for no reason and only have 3000 miles on my 2002 XE. Nissan charged 516.00 for Glass DR charged 253.00. Anyone else had similar problems?

Hmm, I hear the '02s have a thicker windshield to help insulate against the SC's engine noise....

Don't always go for the cheapest place. There are multiple grades of glass out there. The cheapest comes from China and is very thing and brittle. Its junk. Expect to pay about $150-$175. Then comes "aftermarket" grade. Its thicker, not imported, but still thinner than what your truck came with. Pay around $250 or so. The good stuff is genuine dealer glass (Nissan). Its the thickest, and strongest. You will usually see the best breakage warranty on this stuff (1 yr or more). Not cheap, though. About $350 installed. If you go offroading where there are trees or have lots of crud on the roadways, I wouldn't settle for anything less than dealer grade. If you're a parking lot queen, go for the cheap shit.

Yes, State Farm has a $50 window deductible that is separate from your collision deductible. I had a winshield replaced because there were so many gravel pock marks on the surface you couldn't see when driving into the sun.

If you have this policy, I would go for the dealer glass.

Not sure about other areas, but the safelite I went to - the glass came right from a Nissan dealer.

I've never heard of a warranty on glass, though (what does it cover?)

I also have a crack that's growing across the windshield, so I've been talking to quite a few glass dealers. I forget which one it was, but one of the "dealer glass" places offered a 1 year warranty against any breakage (unless you're in an accident). I even specifically asked if it would still be valid if I was offroading and a giant tree branch broke the windshield, and they said it would, so it seems to cover anything.

If you want your glass tinted at the top, like mine is, than ask for PPG glass. BUT. It's expensive, so you may want to call PPG to install it. they are probably cheaper. I think the glass was like 450 and they only paid 300 on mine, so, unbeknownst to me, I had to fork out 150 clams as well. Doh! but hey, who else has a tinted windshield in their X?

Mobycat, you have a crappy avatar. Stupid.

Boom! The double deuce.

I do!! I had been running around with the cracked windshield for about a year and a half, had to have it replace for the state inspection. Paid $240 for it. It helps working part time for a plactic company.

I found the receipt... You won't believe what they charged for my PPG Glass....

$690. I think I had to fork out $180. I wasn't told how much more it was to get the PPG. I think they charged almost $400 MORE for that glass. That's insane. Yeah, I paid the cash because I requested it. A week later I am sitting behind a PPG truck... "We Install!" Shit. I bet it'd have been half the price....

Executive isn't always the cheapest... but they sure are fast.

Matt
