22R Carb problems??
I have a 1986 Toyota 4x4 with a 22R engine. When I first start the truck it accelerates poorly, smells like fuel and surges while at idle. Once the truck gets warmed up I can turn it off for 20 to 30 sec and start it back up and everything is fine. I have changed the fuel filter/plugs/rotor/cap/air filter/PCV valve and thermostat. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Get some valve cleaner. That will most likely help with your ideling problem too.

Re: 22R Carb problems??
its possibly your fuel pump, my truck would have trouble starting so i poured some gas into the carb and it started right up also it would drive fine for a while but then it would start to surge.. i replaced the fuel pump and it runs fine now..

Jaron, I have a 1982 Toyota 4x4 with the 22R. A while back my truck began to idle rough and at times cut off. Most times it seemed to idle perfect, then for no apparent reason it would idle rough, smell of raw gas and belch black smoke out of the tailpipe. I too tried everything that I could think of like fuel additives, choke cleaners, and most of the things that you did. Nothing seemed to help.
Look at your carb on the side that faces the head. If yours is like mine you will see a small cover with phillips head screws and a vacuum line running to it. It is a second or auxilliary accelerator pump. Before disturbing the small cover, pull the vacuum line attached to it and see if you smell raw gas in the line. If you do, here's the next step. Clearance is tight so will need an offset phillips head screw driver or a bit for a 1/4 ratchet to remove the screws. When the screws and cap are removed, you will find a thin rubber diaphram with a spring and plunger affair. When I pulled the diaphram out of mine it had a big crack in it. I bought a replacement at the Toyota dealer (Couldn't find one at an aftermarket parts store). I can't remember exactly how much the part was but I think in the high 20's. Put the new diaphram in spring side to the carb, put the cover in place, replace the screws and vacuum line and you should be in business. After replacing the diaphram I have not had a minutes trouble. I hope this helps. Eddie |

Re: 22R Carb problems??
That diaphram is a common problem on these carbs.
