92 prelude crankshaft / pulley repair

The crankshaft pulley on my 1992 Prelude fell off. I found out the bolt holding the pulley snapped. Local mechics suggests me to buy a rebuilt engine which costs around $1100, he will do the labour for about $500~ $600. The thing is, given the milage of the car (140k), it's only worth $2500 at most. I am really pondering what opions I have. If there a way I can just replace or repair the crankshaft without replacing the whole engine ? Any opinion will be greatly appreciated as I am on really tight budget.

Re: 92 prelude crankshaft / pulley repair

If you have a 92 prelude with that milage on it it should still be worth more then 2500$s, unless is really rusted and the interior is falling apart. In order to change the crankshaft you have to pull your motor. It is possible, and with the motor out its not too hard to do, but before you do go throgh all that work to replace it price outa new crankshaft. They aren't cheap, and make sure you price out your gasket kit and most likely new rod bearings as well, that way you will know your full cost. AFter all that you will finde that its almost worth the same as a new engine, and if you are taking it into a shop, it will most likely be more money for labour to replace the crank than it would be to put in a new engine.

Re: 92 prelude crankshaft / pulley repair

hey no problem, it's just that I went through the exact type of thing, but i wrecked a journal on my crank so i would have had to get it turned and welded and whatnot, so i just dropped a new engine in. My engine was only 1100$ can., but it was a 2.2L DOHC japanese engine instead of the 2.3L DOHC but it runs the same and is just as fast. The only problem was having to swap sensors, fuel rail, and wiring harnesses cause of different emitions and right side drive on the jap cars.
