Cut Springs?

Anybody got instructions on how to cut my springs? It's just temporary, and I would want to do it somehow right (less bounce effect)!
Please don't tell me not to do it, b/c i'm going to and i'd really like to do it semi-correct, so any info would help! thx.

Well when i first got my car...i cut my springs. I used a dremel tool with a round reddish/brown circle disc. Just count how many springs you want cut for every inch dropped. I remember cutting 2 coils on mine to drop it 2". If you want some pics or something, just let me know...i still have to find them but it might help you out.

I'm with Moppie on this one. Easier to slash your wrists.

Well, I wouldn't do it. Though, like he said, he IS going to do it. He just wants to know the "best" way to do it. There is no best way, but my friend took a torch to his. It rode like crap, but you have to kind of expect that... if you are going to cut your springs.

Angle grinder, black masonry cutting disc. Sometimes you can get away with a couple of coils with the spring still remaining captive, but i'm unsure about on a Civic.

Well, if you're into lowering a car, you probably chose the worst way to do it. Keep in mind if you cut the spring too much from the top or bottom, you will have problems with the rubber strut towers meshing with you springs.

I really don't recommend cutting. You just might feel like slashing your wrists before you get done or render your vehicle 'dead' until you can get new springs.

But, hey, the man says he's gonna do it anyhow. Well, if thats the case, then do it by heating the springs. It's better for the rubber mounts and you have to do almost no disassembly except for maybe taking off your wheel.

Either way, the car will ride like utter crap when you are done, but it's your decision. Keep in mind you can get a set of sport springs or race springs for around $150 new or probably under $100 off ebay.

I feel a job should always be done right if its going to be done at all. You say its temporary now, but temporary has a habbit of turning ito a few years more than occassionally.

heating is NOT a good idea. The heat makes the spring brittle and prone to cracking when under load. I have seen many instances of cars being lowered this way and the car ends up with broken springs (not good when driving around corners!

Retensioned is the other way of doing it, which will cost more, but will have safer results...at the end of the day though, nothing will beat a good set of proper aftermarket lowering springs

Yup, your're right about that. I've heard of that happennig to some people too, but I've never witnessed it personally. I knew a few guys who heated their springs and did a decent job, They were warped somewhat, but not too badly and neither of those 2 has broken one yet.

But again, you are correct and I should have mentioned the negative effects of heating your springs too.

Still, you have to agree, either method is just plain wrong. Lowering a vehicle to me is much more about performance that it is about looks and I feel anyone willing to heat or cut their springs just wants to look cool. How cool is it when you bottom out whenever you hit a bump though? CLUNK!

More importantly how cool is it when your 160hp 1990 4WD DOHC Turbo Mazda Famillia is getting tail gated by a stock standard 1973 Triumph 2500TC becuase you cut the springs to lower it, and now cant corner fast enough to get away.

(for you yanks its would be like an orginal ford explorer keeping up with an Si CRX in the twistys.)
