1992 88 stalling

Hello all,

I searched and read through all the posts I could with a problem similar to the one I'm having, didn't find anything close enough (I think).
Here goes:
-200,000 miles 1992 88 Royale 3.8
-stalling. Will stall at 80 mph or idling; random; sometimes engine won't die, it'll buck and jump, ignition resets itself (accessory power resets, radio etc). I can put it in neutral and it'll usually restart in 4 attempts
-ignition module? This one has the key with the security chip unfortuneately
-short? bad ground? I was put on this path, I've traced wires, thumped sensors w/engine running etc etc. The only anomaly I've found is if I tap or shake the fusebox the acc power to the radio resets, engine will not stall.
-the check engine light has been on for 110,000 miles. I had the dealer hook it up to the diagnostic machine at about 94,000, received no codes. I'm afraid the same thing will happen this time.
-would a faulty ECM cause this? The only experience I have with them (Dodges) is total death or obvious fuel/air mixture problems.
-alternator tested fine.

I can't find the trick to get the codes to flash. Does anyone have a link to a post with this info?

Thanks for taking the time to read this. Computers have made our vehicles greener and more efficient, but geez they're a pain to mess with when they go south!

regards

Re: 1992 88 stalling

I Read Your Post . I Am Having Similar Problems.
My 88 Is A 1987. It Will Run Perfect For About 20 Minutes, Then It Just Shuts Off. Any Attempt To Turn It Over Does Not Work. If I Wait About 10 - 20 Minutes It Will Fire Up Again. I Can Prolong Then Shut Down Time By Having The Air Conditioner On. I Tried This The Other Day. After My Drive Home Which Is About 15 Min. I Left The Engine On To See How Long Till It Shut Down. It Continued To Run. I Shut The A/c Off And Within 30 Sec. The Engine Shut Off. I Thought It Might Be Heat In The Coil Pack Problem. But I Have Seen A Post Elsewhere Mentioning This Being A Problem With 88's. I Also Saw Mention Of The "paper Clip" Trick. I Don't Know What This Is But I Will Look For It.
It's Really A Shame This Car Runs Great(till It Shuts Off) There Is No Warning At All When It Does This Either. If You Hear Of Any Solutions Short Of Selling The Car, Please Let Me Know.
Thank You
