Backfire

Trying to reduce my back fires, with the new exaust, when ever I throw the clutch in I get about 4-10 nice loud pops, cool for setting alarms off and all, but not really my style. I've thoroughly checked the exaust system for any leaks (none), I'm thinking maybe some work on the valves would help out a lot. Any ideas? I'm not sure what else would be contributing? I don't have a resonator on the exaust, so if I can't take it down a notch I'll have to add one on.

Re: Backfire

You do have a working cat correct? what is your setup? i saw some product that reduces noise but i need to know your setup to see weather it can be applied to it

yeah I could always just add a resonator on to it, that would just about completely quite up the back fires, I'd rather actualy lower their occurance in the first place though.

do you have a turbo? if not then something is seriously wrong where you can throw fireballs out your tailpipe for a n/a car. if its little poping sounds during a coast down in gear. then its normal. enjoy the sound. for the SRT-4's on their stage 2 upgrade kits. they tune the ecu to run the car to make that sound. so they gotta pay to get that noise, when we get it for free!!

Wouldn't a valve job greatly reduce the problem? And no it's not turbo.

I dunno for sure, but isn't backfiring when the timing is messed up and the ignition happens when the exhaust valves are open? I know that it's bad for your engine and robs you of power.

Not really, I think what it is, is not all of the air in the cylander is being combusted, so when it leaves the engine, it's hot enough for it to ignite in the exaust. If you have say a crack on your header up high, you will get tons of backfires because fresh air is being sucked in from the backpressure. Both cases probably cost you some power. My theory on my car was that my valves being 15 years old have probably been warped a little bit, and may not be making the best possible seal letting that fresh air in

i'm not quite sure whats on my exhaust, but there's a small pipe with a mini filter attached to it.. the guy at the local shop had no clue of what it was.. but its attached to the exhaust below the headers and makes a sound like an exhaust leak... maybe this is a no-brainer but i can't for the life of me figure out what it does... some guy said it might eliminate backfire?!?
i'll get pics on asap

Hmm form earlier

Just because Air (Oxygen) is getting into the the exhaust system after the combustion does not mean that the oxygen can ignite! It only ignites if it has a fuel source such as Gas fumes in your exhaust contents. and vice versa Gas cant combust without Oxygen... most back fires happen right at the end of the exhaust because the GAS is already may be past the combustion point and reaches the oxygen and ignites. lets say Gasoline combusts at 220 degrees F well in the exhaust the gas could be 300 degrees F but not combust because no source of (O2) available. So something is whacked out with your exhaust and why its only when you shfit? iunno

It's not when you shift, it's when you let go of the gas pedal.

Re: Backfire

It'll be the valves way before the compression.

adjustable FPR, Fuel Computer???

backfires while revving down are just what happens when it runs too lean to burn in the combustion chamber. the unburnt fuel collects in the exhaust where the heat has time to set it off. if its doing it while accelerating then you've got bad timing/ingition

if your holding flames while downshifting that means its dumping a shitload of fuel in and doesnt have the air to burn in the chamber
