96 sport starting problem

I have a 96 sport 5 speed and every once in a while when i go to start it the key will turn all the way and nothing happens. The dash will light up and I have power, but no crank. Then if I try it again immediately after it starts right up. Would this be a bad relay, ground, starter issue. It happens every day or so and I am want to fix it now before it goes for good. I am a novice and running on a tight budget so any input would be great

Re: 96 sport starting problem

First, I would look at your ignition switch, to check this disconnect the small wire on your starter, have a buddy turn and hold the key in the start position. Checking with a meter, or light, you should have power. At the same time have your friend jiggle the key abit in that position, see if oyu get an intermittent power, if so look into replacing your switch, I believe its located on the column behind the dash. If this all checks good, remove your starter and have it checked, most parts stores do this for free. Also check ALL of your connections to the starter, negative to the battery, and other grounds. Good luck.

HI, CHECK YOUR BATTERY CABLES TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE CLEAN AND TIGHT. ESPECALLY CHECK THE GROUND WIRE WHERE IT CONNECTED TO ENGINE BLOCK. COULD ALSO BE CORROSION INSIDE THE BATTERY CABLES THEMSELVES CAUSING VLOTAGE LOSS. HOPE THIS HELPS DALE [email protected]
