Better Oil

Mobile One or Royal Purple?

I have a
99 Ford Windstar with 60,000 with 3.8
00 Chevy 3500 with 5.7

I was thinking of switching both over to 10w-40 but which oil product.

The van has always had Mobile One and I wanted both vehicle to have to same oil.

The book says 5w-30 for both for down here in Texas but I think that oil is a little to thin to run with vehicle with mileage that high.

Re: Better Oil

I would stick with the 10w-40 in Texas, maybe so 20w-50 in the truck during the summer months. Mobile one is a good oil. Not to sure on the Royal purple. I personally run Castol synblend in my 91' Silver. w 4.3ltr at 160K and it works great.

Three of the better synthetics on the market are Royal Purple, Amsoil and Red Line in no particular order. And in Texas I'd definetely use 10-40 or maybe 20-50 in summer. By the way....... your oil filter is just as important as the oil you use.

Re: Better Oil

i would use the 10-30 and 10-40 in the summer but nothing heavier . on the newer engines it can cause lots of damage during start up and can cause lots of bad oil leaks. the royal purple, red line and amsoil are way better than mobil and yankee is right on the filter new gm must use ac delco filter or one w/ a check valve

Oil filters.

I heard that. For Fords Motorcraft rocks. I can actually see the difference in oil pressure from different oil filters. A FRAM will cut as much as 20 PSI.

For chevys what would be the best oil filter - ACDELCO / K&N?

I will do like I did with my old Ford. Look at all the filters and pick the one with the most / largerst output holes. FRAMS always have the smallest and fewest holes. I guess they do that to save money. Less holes less stress/usage on the drill bits so they last longer.

Re: Better Oil

i have not been able to find out if k&n has a check valve or not but as far as the filter media it is better.plus it has i really high burst pressure, but you dont need to worry bout that. the fram tough gaurd has a check valve

i use oyal purple with k&n on my 81 chevy 350

Wix ????

They were the worst of them all on lowering the oil pressure but if they work they work and that what matters.

Re: Better Oil

Mobil 1 would be a good choice for price and availability. If you think the 10W-30 is too thin, you could thicken it with a quart or 2 of 15W-50. They are also making a 5W-40 now.

I haven't used a Fram filter since I saw one cut apart at a parts store--the endcaps on the filter element were cardboard. The Wix beside it had metal endcaps. The $2 Super Tech filters at Wal- Mart are built by the same company that makes AC Delco filters, with metal endcaps. I think the element in the AC is different, though. I'd use AC or Wix (NAPA, Carquest) with the extended drain mileage you can get from a synthetic oil.
