Programming Keys

My question is about programming the keys to the car when the ECU is replaced.

My car is a 2002 Passat 1.8L Turbo 5-Speed.

The dealer told me you don't always have to program the keys after replacing the ECU (that's his reason for why they didn't tell me they needed my keys last week when they told me they needed to replace the ECU) but I think he might be lying to me b/c that doesn't make very much sense.

Wouldn't you always have to re-program the keys after the ECU is replaced (and not just sometimes)? Also, how is this done? Can I do this myself? I ask because I NEED my car before the dealer opens tomorrow, and they are not being helpful!

Or, can the ECU be programmed to match with my key if I have the code number that came with my keys initially? I have that, and if I could call the dealer with that number and have them fix it today, that would be awesome!

The Dealer Has To Do It Due To You Needing A Seven Digit Immobilizer Code To Program The Keys And Any Time The Ecm Or The Cluster Is Replaced All The Keys Will Need Adapted To Start And Run The Engine.
