92 Tracer wagon (same as Escort?) fuel cutout and brake lights came on...

Hi!! I have a 92 Tracer, which I've been told is essentially an Escort. This weekend, I was driving along and the fuel cutout and brake lights came on, the engine was running poorly, and the engine WOULD NOT shut off, even with the key out of the switch!!! I was driving back home and everything went back to normal. I am afraid to drive the car until I get it fixed. Any thoughts?? Anyone else heard of this?? Thanks in advance!!

Well, I have a 92 ford escort and my fuel cutoff went out one time but my car didn't stay running. Usually the fuel cutoff light comes on because your either (a) running too low on gas in danger of burning up your fuel injector or (b) hit a big ass bump and the gas in your tank lifted setting the fuel cutoff switch off, (which happened to mine.) But either one all you have to do, (not sure it's the same for tracers,) but in the hatch there's a panel you can remove which inside is your fuel cutoff swicth. Simply turn it back on. That will take car of the cutoff light, not sure about the brake light though sorry bud. Good luck!

Hi! I am having the same exact problem with my escort! brakes and fuel cutout lights went on at the same time.
did you figure out your problem?
I tried resetting the fuel cutout switch but the light is still on and still have issue swith starting.... the engine turns but it's not getting gas... then sometimes it will continue churning even after I turn it off and take the key out!

thanks,
e

As for the brake light....check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder (about a foot from the firewall in-line with the steering wheel, high-up in the engine compartment)...it should be near MAX in the see thru reservoir. If it is low...you either need to replace the front disc pads or there is a leak in the brake line. Worn out pads need replacing-don't just add fluid or you'll start grinding up the rotor. If a leak, add DOT 3 Heavy Duty Brake fluid up to the max until you get it fixed....Now, if the computer is malfunctioning, the brakes may be fine.
