North Koreas' accident/test?
I am surprise no one has mention anything about the mysterious explosion on the North Korean/China border the other day. Some say its an accident, while others say its the Koreans testing a nucleur device.
Any thoughts PICA members? TS out

Whatever it was, it's suspicious. I think it could be a few weeks before we find out what exactly it was.

Oooooh, so that's where all those WMDs must be hiding - under the giant mushroom cloud in N. Korea!
![]() It's too bad that Kim Jong Il wasn't hiding inside the same explosion.

Re: North Koreas' accident/test?
I saw Dr. Condalisa Rice (sp) being interviewed on CNN today. The US gov't is not conforming nor excluding the notion its a nuclear device.
I expect their seismographs bounced all over the place, yet for political and foreign relations reasons, they are considering how to address this. N. Korea recently had a major civilian industrial accident which was made public right away, so I suspect this is a deliberate explosion or a military accident. N. Korea does test and develop short and medium range ballistic missles for their own use and export. Perhaps some of them blew up by accident. If the N. Koreans are doing above ground nuclear testing, this is a very serious escalation of their political posturing and nuclear extorsion of their neighbours. |

Until there are some documented facts on the table,I'm not jumping to any conclusions.I'll leave the paranoia and finger-pointing to the hillbillies.

North Korean Govt's official statement is that they blew up a mountain as part of a construction project (of a hydro power station).

If it was a nuclear device - Japan would be frantic right now. They aren't. The moment N. Korea displays that they have functioning nulcear weapons, you can bet your bottom dollar that Japan will produce some. This of course will scare the Chinese and we'll have another mini arms race like India and Pakistan had/have going on.
The south asian cultures all have long memories. WWII memories are still very prevelent in how the countries see each other (especially in China and Korea).

Saw on the news this morning that the blast was to clear an area to begin construction on something(they said what it was but I can't remember). I figured it wasn't a nuke.

Re: North Koreas' accident/test?
yeah apparently they blew up a mountain for their new hydro-electric scheme... but what takes out a mountain and creates a 4km mushroom cloud?
personal opinion... i think the Koreans were (aside from just wanting to get rid of a mountain) flexing their muscle informatively, not threateningly. I think it may get covered up so as not to create global/western panic but all the people they wanted to know will know what they are capable of. China already has nuclear weapons, and i believe is about the only stabilising factor on the U.S in the area, now NK has shown they have them too but is not threatening to use them i suppose it makes them safer from invasion. Lets not forget that The North Koreans lost millions of civilians to american firebombing in the Korean war, (more than the jews Hitler killed) i think this is meant to be a detering factor to avoid that happening again.

Re: North Koreas' accident/test?
I doubt it was a nuke. More countries would be panicing, to include NZ and AUS since we're downwind, I imagine.
I think the guy above me is right. Just them flexing their muscles. Lots of conventinal weapons make a mushroom cloud, too. |

Re: North Koreas' accident/test?
do we get much weather from there? i thought mostly it came from the roaring 40's and the indian ocean type area??...
besides, with all the other testing thats been done (specially in australia by britain!) how much difference would the fallout make? not to mention the amount of radiation present from other sources these days!

Well yes, but that makes sense and as we all know, governments rarely deal in common sense.

Re: North Koreas' accident/test?
Thank you thank you. I'm not allowed to post a new thread with a pic of Nelson Mandela being freed though
Back to the topic. Yeah that missile test was pretty amusing. "Which way did it go? East? Oh. It was meant to go North. Sorry about that, Japan. It was an accident. Really. I'm not kidding!" |
