Hard top to targa top

I have a MA70 (not 71). I want to do a targa top conversion. Will it take it? Are my doors still gonna shut properly? I believe it was the MA71 that had the targa top, not sure though.

Re: Hard top to targa top

MA70 and MA71 are the same chassis, in the early years (87-88) the n/a was designated MA70, the turbo MA71, but demand in the later years forced toyota to drop that label I suppose. As for the targa conversion, forget about it, if you want a targa buy a targa car. Why would you go through all the trouble of doing the conversion when Toyota already did it for you, it's not like the targa cars are hard to find by any means.

Re: Hard top to targa top

I was gonna put a sunroof in it, but I couldn't imagine it looking right. I figured out a way to make it a targa top really easy using the parts of the sunroof. I didn't like the way the other targas were set up. I wanted it to operate like a manual sunroof. (Plus theyre usually so old that they leak as bad in the rain as not having it on at all) Buying a whole other car just to get a targa top is kinda drastic, especially when I'm happy with everything on the hard top. I dunno, sunroof or targa top, the idea of cutting up my roof kinda scares me!

Re: Hard top to targa top

I'm not following you here, there is no physical way a sunroof could ever be a targa, no way a peice of glass would stop the twisting motion of the body. Targa's don't leak as bad as your making it sound, after 15 years mine had a few drips in the rain from just the corner, some silicone spray and it's good as new. Keep the hardtop, if you want sunshine on your head buy a targa instead of cutting a hole in a good hardtop.
