Post Quick or how to distinguish what engine I have....

[color=blue][font=lucida console][size=7]

I realize that sounds like a silly question but I have been an avid Chevy man for my whole life. This is my first Ford, it is an 1990 F-250 and has a 5.8 in it. My buddy swears it is 460 but I think it is a 351 Windsor. I did not get an owner's manual with the truck and I am the second owner. I asked the original owner and he says "I (get this) always assumed it was a V-8"......LOL. Needless to say he was not much help.

The truck has 138,00 on it and is very straight. Brand new transmission and I did a complete front and rear brake job on it yesterday. It is a great hauler and so far, other than everything is the exact opposite of a Chevy, I am pleasantly surprised. I am just stumped on what motor I really have. Would like to save a few bucks from purchasing a Chilton's book just to find out.

Can anyone help?

Also, is it a typical thing for the radio light not to work? Hoe about the gas gauges? My friend says it is a typical thing with those models of Froid.....

Thanks a bunch ahead of time.....

As far as your lights/guages not working, well, it's typical that some things will break but it's not typical for them to not work, so you'll want to have them looked at and fixed.

As far as your engine question, the 5.8L V8 is easy to figure out. The rule for converting L size to cubic inch size, is that for every 100 cubic inches, there are 1600cc (or 1.6L...so the 5.8L would be 5800cc).

Therefore, the equation you work with is:

1600/100 = 5800/?

Then in order to find out the number given by the question mark, you simply cross mulitply and divide to find what the value of the question mark is:

? = (100 x 5800)/1600

Once you have calculated this number you will have the cubic inch displacement of your truck's engine:

? = 362.5 (round the answer up to 363)

So your truck has a 363 under the hood. Hope that explanation makes sense to you, if i can be of more help, post back and i'll come in and reply.

Re: Quick or how to distinguish what engine I have....

Look at the intake. If the intake has two individual inlets (and hoses) and the openings face forward, then it's a 460 (7.5L). If the openings face to the side, then it's not. ASnother way to verify, is that the 460s have a 2" piece of STRAIGHT heater hose between the intake and the water pump on the right side, while the 5.0/5.8Ls have a hose with a 90* bend in it.
