Replacing Shaft Radio with ISO-DIN in 95 Corolla
Has anybody done this? I'm a newbie at installing radios. I have a 95 corolla and it had a factory installed shaft radio. The shaft radio was installed in the upper dash above the a/c. There is also a larger lower dash that looks more like an ISO type radio installation and it sounds like to me that some people install the radios there. The configuration looks like this:
[radio opening] [a/c] [empty box that looks like a radio could be installed here ] [cd tray] I bought a ISO-DIN radio and bought a Scosche converter kit. Very poor instructions in both but the kit does say the pocket is supposed to go where the upper dash is, leading me to believe the radio is to be installed in the lower dash after taking out the empty plastic "box". Is this true? But I haven't figured out how to install the radio in that large a compartment. There doesn't seem to be any holes on the side for the screws and it doesn't seem to fit right. It seems to me it would make much more sense to install it where the old radio was pulled out. But there's no bracket in the upper dash since it's a shaft and there's even less support for the radio then in the lower. How do I do this? The kit does not include brackets to fit the din radio in.Do I have the wrong kit? Has anyone installed the radio in the lower dash? And if so what converter kit did you use? Also I bought the Scosche plug but it only has a 10 hole plug whereas the toyota is a 12 pin plug. What is the deal? Am I supposed to use only 10 wires or do I need another kit? It's supposed to work with 1995 corolla. I have searched low and high on the net and have found NO useful instructions. Most of them are general or ignore the pecularities of the 95 corolla (or at least the shaft style I have). They all seem to assume there's an ISO bracket in the upper dash to attach to but not mine! |

Followup
Well apparently I don't have a factory radio - it's a aftermarket shaft radio that was installed without the brackets (the car was bought used). Apparently the factory brackets that were removed from the installation so I can't use them. In addition the wires were rewired and for an "old panasonic" type radio (the radio was a Clarion). This was all according to the Circuit City install guys I had look at it when I went to buy another conversion kit thinking I had the wrong one.
I'm still trying to do this myself and save like $100 - it looks like I need a new set of brackets from the toyota dealer and to rewire. Is rewiring going to be a problem (they said it has to be a custom hard wire job- the wire harness won't work) or is it just a matter of connecting the correct colors? Any other suggestions? Also, I'm still wondering, is the aftermarket radio supposed to go in the lower dash? It's a double din size - has anybody used a conversion kit to put a single iso-din radio in the lower dash? |
