help with parts

I recently just bought a 1995 lumina car that has 200,000 miles on it for a very good price. the biggest problem with the car is that the transmission sticks in park when yyou put it in any gear. I know it is in the tranny but every shop I took it to said it was something else with the linkage or the ignition. but what I am looking for is a motor and tranny combo for my car at a decent price (under $700). I am a very cheap person. what is the best places to get parts from and from what year vehicles. I really don't feel like paying $1300 for a tranny rebuild and then have to pay the same amount for a engine rebuild (which I will do myself, just no the tranny. thanks for any help and for listening

Richard

Re: help with parts

You try putting it in gear from the tranny side of the linkage? Make sure the E-brake is on, and the wheels chocked. Bought a Dodge Omni once from a guy who thought the tranny was spent, turned out the cable to the linkage was stretched. Used to open the hood and drop it in drive, until I replaced the cable. But if it truly needs the tranny, I would think your price range would not be out of line for a complete driveline from any salvage yard. I just bought a 3.8L Ford with AXOD tranny from a yard here for my buddy's Sable, $600, and it is a great running combo.

Re: help with parts

thanks for the help. I ws also wondering what year motors and tranny's will work in this car and from what vehicles. I know the 3100 was used in many different GM vehicles. just trying to figure out what will work before i do anything.

Re: help with parts

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please, but..I *believe* the 95 used the 4t60-E transmission, it should line up to most every W body (not sure). It was GM's primary automatic transmission in the late 90's as far as I know.
