Question Car Parts question, plz help...

Hi, recently i got in an accident with my 1988 Volvo 760 GLE. Nothing too major, 2 flat tires, busted lights, etc. The car still runs fine, the only problem is that if i were to fix it, I'd have to replace the airbag that deployed, and I don't have that kind of money right now. So basically I'm trying to sell the car for parts, scrap metal and such. Being as I've never sold parts or scrap metal before, I'm not too sure on how to go about doing this. Where would I take my car, and what would a reasonable price be for the parts and metal? I just don't want to get ripped off or anything you know. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

might be easier to sell it as a parts car. just explain what happened and someone who has a similar volvo might buy it to keep around for spare parts or to gut it for some they need immediately

warning though don't expect to get too much for a parts car

OK, I'll admit that I'm a redneck, but I just can't justify junking out a car that is essentially a good vehicle. Cars don't need airbags to run - I would cut the bag out and start looking in salvage yards for a used airbag that has not deployed. As long as you are careful not to create any static, you can safely replace the airbag, fix the tires & lights, viola - good car. Otherwise, you're going to take a loss. This is just one redneck's opinion...

Just curious, are airbags required by law now? If so, is it State or federal? Otherwise you could fix the other stuff and drive around like all the rest of us who have older cars do or sell it with a disclosure of facts and get some money back and give some one else a deal at the same time. Or not.

Far as I know they're required to be put in by the manufacturer when the car is built...beyond that who knows

yeah also the laws are most likely different between cars that came with airbags versus those older ones that were never designed to accomodate them. kind of like you can dodge emissions if you car is over ten years old, at least in MA

if you call the DMV or your insurance company, either should be able to tell you whether you have to do it or not. also, i was under the impression that it was only about 100 dollars to have an airbag re-done, maybe i'm mistaken on that one but it does seem crazy to junk it if that's the case...

i think laws dont allow the sale of used air bags, if it where me id check on ebay to see if they have "fill ins" for lack of a better word, they go in place of the bags they just bolt up, thats it, there nothing in them they just cover the holes, i know they sell them for ford cars, not sure about volvos, id search around for someone parting a volvo, buy bags from them pop them in, did an insurance claim get filled with this?
