Exclamation 93 Suburban k1500

I have a had an intermittant miss at idle for the last 12 mo's and it seemed to be more & more common but would never cause any probs accelerating or cause it to stall, In the last few weeks it stalled once (air on) and then died completely lats week, after having it towed to my office I did some dignostic and noted no spark, After consulting with my mechanic buddy he recommended changing ignition module which I did, I alos changed the coil for good measure since it had never been changed, The truck started right up and it seemed fine, We'll about 5 days later it started to miss at idle again then so I changed the idle air control valve, it made no difference and died again two days ago and will not start? I checked for spark and did not have any (again) What else could cause this? Is it the Pick coil or should I just repalce the entire distributor? Any help is appreciated. She's got over 180k miles.

If you've checked everything else, Distributor wouldn't be a bad idea.

Could have worn shaft bushings. Possibility. Maybe.

180k? New Distributor and Timing Chain.

Re: 93 Suburban k1500

I am going to go ahead and replace the distributor and see what happens, previous to that the truck ran flawless never had a problem with the engine, oil changed every 3k or 3 mo's since I don't drive much any more. I will keep you posted.

TIA

Question Re: 93 Suburban k1500

OK After much trying to fix and stumping alot of local techs, I decide to drive it around and see where it seems to have probs, For the most part it will lurch on idle once in a while and as long as you let the truck creep up and not hold it with the brakes it won't die going foward, When put in reverse it will die easier. I disconnected the plug on the firewall(forgot what this wires called) when adjusting the timing and noticed the idle dropped pretty low (barely tell the truck is on) but it runs better and the truck doesn't die like when it's plugged in, What the heck could this be! It passes smog too and doesn't give any trouble codes, Check engine light is on due to wire being unplugged will go out when plugged in but runs worse?

Re: 93 Suburban k1500

Hi,this sounds similar to a pick up coil prob I had a while back. Not exactly the same but there are similarities here,as in it would be fine for a few days then start messin up.Control module kept coming up bad untill pick up coil replaced.I battled this prob for a long time while nobody I knew had a clue what it could be,untill the parts counter guy suggested replacement and it was cheap and not to hard to replace.Hey I'm all about cheap but it would be even easier if ya just ghead n replace the whole darn thing!(distributer)

Re: Re: 93 Suburban k1500

Check the distributor shaft for side to side play, there should not be any play. My friend and I were having the same problem with a 93 suburban that you are having would run rough and miss. Replaced the distributor with an aftermarket one from Napa. The miss went away but the vehicle kept wanting to die as soon as you turned the steering wheel at a stop. We removed the Napa distributor and put in a factory GM distributor and now the truck runs flawlessly.

Re: 93 Suburban k1500

It has new distributor for Autozone, I'm not sure if had the original or not originally but she seems to run fine with the ETC wire unplugged? Check engine lite comes on though. Taking to a friends shop today so he could plug it into diagnostic computer.

Re: 93 Suburban k1500

is the timing set to 0 with the wire unplugged? what does the timing do when the wire is plugged in?? also the knock sensor might be acting up and causing the ecm to retard the timing. i've found that i have a lot fewer problems by using GM parts instead of the jobbers.

Re: 93 Suburban k1500

Thats what my buddies telling me is too avoid the Autozone parts and go with strictly AC Delco parts for GM, since he says there are less problems with the parts and are always within acceptable limits where he's tested aftermarket parts and BRAND NEW there not even within acceptable operating limits! We'll see I may have to put a AC Delco Ignition module & pickup coil on my brand new Autozone Distributor!

Re: 93 Suburban k1500

In regards to the timing the idle will pick up about 100 rpms but will idle fine when in P or N, but when it idles in Drive or reverse it will idle fine but intermittantly stumble and cause the truck to lurch foward as the computer trys to keep it from dying. With the ETC wire disconnected it doesn't do this but idles a tad lower, runs better too!

Re: 93 Suburban k1500

OK this may interest a lot of folk, There was nothing wrong with the truck aside from the Aftermarket Distrubutor from autozone, When connected to the diag computer it showed normal ECU funtion as well as all the sensors within limits and the O2 sensor, So we decided to change the distributor to an AC delco and see what happened. It fixed the problem totally-truck runs awesome now. Abit of advice is don't chinze on the Autozone stuff and just get AC Delco for your GM car, you'll have less headaches.

Re: 93 Suburban k1500

Was the AC Delco Dist a brand new one or was it rebuilt? Did you get it a dealer or AC Delco parts distributor?

I am asking because I think I need to replace my dist as well.

Re: 93 Suburban k1500

My friend has his own shop he got it from an AC Delco distributor same place dealers get their parts and it was brand new not rebuilt cost about $230.00 He even kept the truck for a few days to make that was it and sure enough the truck runs fine now, idles nice and quiet. I even got autozone to refund me for the aftermarket distributor!

P.S. It even comes with a new cap and rotor!
