94 vibration below center console under floor.
94 runner has 137,000 on. SR5-V-6 Automatic. All stock except for edlebrock shocks and stiffer rear coil springs.
For a year now at least, I have been trying to pinpoint this tingle. Driving down the road if you just feather the throttle on & off very lightly at 15- 2500 RPM's or so you can hear and feel it below the console. It only does it for a few seconds then disappears. In neutral it DOES NOT do it.I checked the exhaust, tin plate sheilds (at least 3 on) and can't find nothing loose that would cause this annoying noise. It's very low and some it might not even bother but it sure bothers me. Noises are funny how they travel, so I'm not sure where the main source is? I'm wondering if the guts to the catalitic converter have somewhat fallen apart inside and this is traveling through the exhaust system causing the low hum-vibration but that doesn't explain why it only does it being driven. Can't be the muffler because that is brand new. U- joints are all fine. Just sounds like cheap tin vibrating but I sure can't find it. Bugs me man, BUGS ME!!! |

I had this same problem over a year ago. I checked all of the same things too but couldn't find it. I finally took it in to a repair shop and was fortunate enough to replicate the noise. I don't remember the specifics but when I had the 0 rings replaced they forgot to slide a single bearing back in between two pieces of metal... they put it back in and haven't heard the noise since. it was a cheap fix.

Re: 94 vibration below center consule under floor.
What o-rings & bearing? I wish you could tell me EXACTLY what they did. This noise sounds so cheap otherwise the runner is pretty rock solid yet.
I beg of you...can you find out for me? Thanks a TON!! -Huffa |

I also have the same problem so if someone out there knows how to fix it please let us know. The 4runner runs great with no problems except for the vibration under the car. On my 4runner is only does the vibrations when you keep the speed steady under 60 mph. But when you accelerate there is no vibration. Also if you change it in nutreal while going less than 60 mph the vibration goes away.
Thank you, Tomas |

I swear, when ever I have these small problems Toyota never knows a damn thing. We know more then they do alot of times!
That generation went from what ? ...90-96? but yet they say: Geez sir, we never had anyone else have that problem. Yea right, OK, I'm the 1st one in all that time! |

I'm sorry I don't have any documentation for this. I had the problem fixed at a small "fix all kind of things" shop. Dealerships never have a clue.

I Have the same with my 94 Hilux (4Runner) it only happens at exactly 2000rpm and does not happen in first gear or I have not heard it in first gear.
I have been told it could be the drive shaft? Unfortunatly with my geographical location finding mechanics of high enough quality are hard to come by, let alone finding the right parts to fix the problem once diagnosed. Any possible solutions to this rattle would be appreciated. |

Re: 94 vibration below center consule under floor.
Mine is starting to get more vibration now, which is a good thing, since it will make it easier to find.
I'm starting to veer towards what Mr. Jones said....could very well be a drive shaft U joint. Let you all know when I check it out. |

Re: 94 vibration below center consule under floor.
Even the slightest bit of play in the U-Joints would cause a little vibration. Mine started off with a little vibration, and then many months later and after a few trips to Mexico, I realized that the U-Joint closest to the differential was right about to explode.
Not to mention, the drive shaft needs to be balanced. There are small weights tacked onto the shaft, sometimes they fall off during off-roading, that would also cause vibration. A drive shaft shop would be able to do this service....shouldn't be too expensive. |

Re: 94 vibration below center consule under floor.
Resolved the noise I was describing;
Using chassis ears pinned down the noise to the left fender well. Insulated/tightened down air filter box, mount point from fender to radiator, alternator wiring harness. The noise was harmonic meaning at a certain rpm range under load it would create a vibration through the left fender well. The noise would travel this area of the chassis like a bell and reverberate behind the instrument cluster inside the cab. So much so that to the naked ear you could swear the problem was with the dash or instrument cluster area. |

Had exact same problem
"Mine started off with a little vibration, and then many months later and after a few trips to Mexico, I realized that the U-Joint closest to the differential was right about to explode."
I was baffeled! Turns out it was as SIMPLE as tightening the huge nut on the rear output driveline yoke, it was so loose I could feel the play the second I gave the driveline a shove sideways, watch the yoke there should be no movement. The problem is if it has run this loose for a while it will be hard to impossible to center the yoke due to wear and the bearing may also be degraded. It is easy to check! |
