Celica GTS vs Prelude

I'm not too familiar with Toyota's but my friends friend wants to drag with me at the track. He says he'll beat me. He has a Celica GT with a GTS swap in it...just intake and catback. I have a 98 Prelude base model with intake, header, straight cat, catback, and pulley kit. How well is the Toyota's VVT-I and the GTS itself?

Re: Celica GTS vs Prelude

too many factors in this situation. prelude weighs significantly more, BUT preludes also got 160ishlbs Tq compared to the VVTI which has 131lb. Hp- only a 15hp diff between the two(stock-wise). youve also got more mods though. in a stock situation i would have the celica edging the lude out but in your case its more of a drivers race. Interestling comparison thouhg, lately ive been dying to race one of those GTSs myself

Yes, my mistake. The GTS has VVTL-i...the regular GT and most other engines are VVT-i. Is VVTL-i the same as Honda's VTEC?

Re: Celica GTS vs Prelude

I been doing some research and found some specs about the GTS but his car has a GT body with a GTS engine so it is a little lighter. Curb weight is 2500lb with 180 hp @7600rpm and 130 lb ft torque @ 6800rpm. Why are Preludes so heavy?

Re: Celica GTS vs Prelude

it's an even race. driver skill will win this race everytime. but all things being equal, i would say the GTS is the quicker car. the lude's weight is just too much of a burden. shed a couple hundred pounds and the prelude will eat up the gts.

VVTL-i is actually more advanced than the VTEC in preludes but works similarly. VTEC-i is about on the same level though.

Re: Celica GTS vs Prelude

thats a different story...now things may be leaning a bit in his direction depending on how well he tuned it.
