windshield wipers

My windshield wipers work unpredictably. The wipers usually turn on if I am driving for a long time but not all the time. Under the hood I cannot see any wiring or connections for the wipers. Does anyone have an idea where I should start?
TIA, Frank C.

Re: windshield wipers

This is a common problem, so common the dealer sells replacement circuitboards for your wiper motor. All you need to do if you can is remove the wiper motor assembly from the truck and resolder the connections for the plug on the circuit board of the wiper motor control, It's faily easy to do just make sure you get enough heat in there to make sure the solder job is soild, This should fix your problem, It happened to me the parts guy told me about it and I haven't had a problem since!

windshield wipers

Thanks GMC, Could you give me an idea of where this mechanism can be found and how to access it? Do you have any special tips about removal?
TIA, Frank C.

Post Re: windshield wipers

You can buy the curcuit board on ebay for under $20. I did mine a few months ago, very easy. The board is on the wiper motor, I don't recall the specifics, but it didn't take any special tools or skills. Just unplug the old one and replace with the new one.

Hope this helps,
Al

Re: windshield wipers

On the firewall you'll see the wiper motor assembly, where the plug connects on the wiper motor assembly is located is where the problem occurs, that is where hairline cracks develop around where the connector is soldered to the circuit board. I removed mine from the truck to fix it, If you are able to remove the plastic cover and access the soldered connector you may be able to fix it on the truck. To confirm this is the problem turn the truck to the on position and turn on the wipers, then go and wiggle the connector that goes into the wiper motor and see what happens.

Re: Windshield Wipers

i just joined the forum and already have learned to repair the problem with the circuit board on the wiper motor, soldered five spots on the back of the board where the plug is joined there, just like gmc mudbogger said and it worked like a charm! thanks guys!

Re: windshield wipers

Before you go and buy a pulse board for your wipers, which installs in your wiper motor assembly, go to the dealer and check for an active safety recall. If you do have that particular recall available for your vehicle and it is a SAFETY item, it will be replaced at no charge.

I did what you said and now my wipers are perfect! How did u know to look at the soilder on the printed circuit board? I did a close inspection before I soildered and I could not see any problems with it, but I re melted the soilder anyways and put it back together, was as good as new.

I actually bookmarked this site last year before I got my truck. Last week guess what started acting up? I have a 4 hr drive ahead of me in the morning through the cold and snow, guess it's time to break out the soldering gun...

Re: windshield wipers

I found the fix by going to the dealer to buy a reoplacment part, which they didn't have in stock and the parts guy actually told me what it probably was and what I needed to do, kinda cool since he lost a sale but helped my out.
