instrument cluster conversion

Hi, I was wondering what it would take to convert from my "guages" style dash cluster to a digital one (in an s-10 '91 blazer). According to some sources on the internet, the conversion is as simple as changing the cluster if you have a 'Z' in the 8th position of you VIN. I do have a z there, so according to this rule, it would be easy -- But is this true? Has anybody done such a conversion/switch before?

If anybody knows of a website that gives a step by step, or more info on such a thing, I'd love to hear about it

thanks in advance for any info.

Re: instrument cluster conversion

Dakota Digital makes really nice gauges for old hotrods. These gauges come complete with the harness and relays. They can probably answer all your questions and really help you out

you don't want to do this.

People are having a lot of problems with the digital gauge cluster's computers dying all the time.

Stick to gauges and stay simple.

the reason why I want to switch is because i can't read my regular guages...something with my eyes. thought the digital would solve this problem --

I don't mind fixing bad parts on things. I can't imagine the computer dying after it is fixed unless there is some kind of design flaw..

Re: instrument cluster conversion

That is the problem, there is a poor design flaw with the digital dashes.

Get new glasses.

well, i would still like a challenge

but while i'm talking about instrument clusters -- is there a way to work on the trip meter? mine is broken... it's stuck on 5254 and pressing the reset button makes a crunching sound

So, all discouragement aside, does anyone know how to do the conversion from analog to digital for this series? If the thing takes a crap you can always put the analog back in, but the s10 digital dashes sure look pimp.

Re: instrument cluster conversion

well i think the wiring is the same behind the plug so if you cut the plug in off and wire the digital one in you should be able to make it work.

from all the info i've gathered, and all the clusters and connectors i've seen, i've never seen a digital cluster with the same connector as an analog one. From what i've seen is that digital only uses the 34-pin connector in the middle-back of the cluster, and the 18-pin connector is only used by the analog cluster. but prove me wrong... i'd love to see pictures
