Re: service engine light reset

The light does not need to be reset. If the SES light came on, there is a problem with an emissions related failure. On all 96 and newer model OBDII vehicles, the emissions systems, tailpipe & evaporative are monitored byt the PCM (computer). Typically if the failure was eroneous, after 40 or so monitor cycles the light will go out and the DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) will be set in history. The most inexpensive way you can get away with trying to see if it was an eroneous problem is to go to somewhere like AutoZone. Have them use a scan tool to retrieve the stored DTC's. Don't just let them clear them. Write down the DTC# (Example P0300) then let them clear it. If you tell us the DTC failure we may be able to help you fix your problem. Most of the people that work at such places will pull codes and try to sell you a part. Sometimes you get lucky, most times you're throwing money out the window. Hope my post makes sense and helps.

ok i went to autozone today and had them check the code, said had a misfire on cylinder 4. a mechanic friend of mine said it could have been a piece of carbon or dirty fuel injector and has me running a can of injector cleaner through now. they erased the code for me and so for has not come back on. guess i will see if it comes back on or not. thx

That will not cause your SES light to come on. The only thing that can trip that light is an emissions failure. That's federal laws for OBDII certified emissions. Something like an aftermarket remote starter won't cause that.
