Intake and Exhaust

Hey guys, New to the forum. Looked for a thread on this, at least 5 pages back, and didnt find one.... so....


I'm looking at getting a K&N Intake for my 2003 5.3 1500

I see there is a 77 series High flow performance intake kit as well as a Generation II Air intake kit.
the 77 series is only 13 bux more.. Can anyone enlighten me as to which of these would be the preferable choice?


As far as exhaust I am looking at a Flowmaster
Should I look to the Force II or the American Thunder. I'd like a deep growl, that opens up on acceleration. And which is better , rear exit or side? benefits of steel over aluminum?

Welcome, someone may correct me if im wrong but the difference between the 77 series and the gen II is aluminum vs. plastic intake tube. Preferences would be for looks and there is some argument that the aluminum might provide a cooler air charge. I bought the gen II and have been very pleased, figured if i was feeling froggy sometime i might wrap the plastic tube with aluminum insolation tape for a cooler charge. Flowmaster 40's is what your looking for on the exaust howerver this will be loud and you should drive someone elses before you try it. In the flow master line 40's are loud 50's less and 60' series just about like your stock pipe . Good luck...JJ

I have a 99 Silverado with a 5.3

I have the K&N 77 series- LOVE IT - the polished metal looks so much better than plastic.

I also have the 30 series Flowmaster Thunder dual exhaust out the back with stainless tips - LOVE IT

The sound is awesome with these two mods on.

Im gonna go for the 77 series, that aluminum will look perty

And thx for the reference on the exhaust, I definetely want loud, but not annoyingly so.. Just a good deep rumble.

I was wondering if anybody can tell me how much gain in horsepower and torque I can expect with installing my new KNN 77 series air intake system along with flowmaster american thunder sytem in my 2001 chevy silverado with the 4.8L small block V8. The factory has it rated as 270hp and 285lb feet.

I put a MagnaFlow Cat back on my 02 and love it. Add a FIPK to that and you're set.
