Re: loud screech from engine
belts for sure. Unfortunately, I am extremely experienced in this area. It is a DSM thing, these damn belts screeching...
1) pulleys could be put in BACKWARDS (as was mine, though the difference was only 0.05mm, no more noise after dealership put it in correctly). 2) bad quality belts. Recently replaced belts, guy put in some new brand with cross-thacthed belt tread pattern unlike the regular OEM stright-lane grooved belt. Screeched like a MOTHERF(ER no matter what adjustment was made. Most likely the AC belt and the power steering one. Put stock belts on, problem solved, no problemo, hasta la vista, BAYBEH! 3) belt tensioned incorrectly. Usually solved the easiert, tighten or untighten accordingly 4) buy a Honda. Pick this one if you wanna get shot. hehe (for legal reasons, I must put here that I was just kidding about getting shot.

Re: loud screech from engine
Right; unless the car has been in for service recently where they would have taken pulleys off (i.e. timing belt job), I would guess it was probably an old belt that has stretched or the mounting brackets of your alternator, ac compressor, or power steering pump not being adjusted properly.
Did you just get the 60k mile service done? If so, chances are the mechanics didn't tighten the mounting brackets enough to set belt tension to spec. Take it back, show them the belts squealing, and they should fix it if you have receipts.

Re: loud screech from engine
my car also has this problem with noises, im quite sure its the belts or 1 of of them i should say, i would have some one start your car for you while the hood is open and stand there in front of the engine to try and see where the sound comes from im sure you could at least find the general area and narrow it down a bit..
