To test a catalytic converter you take your fist and bang on the bottom of it.
Hit it like you mean it. If you hear rust debris or marbles then it is bad. Otherwise it will sound like thin metal. There is a heat shield around it so a hollow tin sound is normal. |

I used an air chisel to get mine off. If you have an air compressor the air chisel is like $15. I started with the hammer then a bigger hammer then I thought "what am I doing here?" I got out the chisel and it split the pipe like a hot knife through butter. Good luck.
ByronP I went for a high flow cat from DynoMax. http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...92&prmenbr=361 |

I replaced mine last night,
i used a grinder to make a slit through the pipe, loaded it with penetrating oil and then went to town with a hammer, after a minute or so of pounding it losened up and i was ably to shimmy it by hand and walk it back off the pipe. of course i used the old sawzall to remove the muffler and other rear exhaust components first. |
