2004 Engine noise

I just got my 2004 TB and I have noticed when driving it once it gets to 2800 to 3000 rpm I hear a rattling noise. It seem almost when it is shifting gears but that is the only time it does it there is not rattling any other time. I am not sure what it is. The truck only has 300 miles on it. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem and had it fixed and can help me out. I have call into the dealer to get it into the shop and see what they say. All I know is I am not going to let them tell me it is normal because it does not sound normal.

Re: 2004 Engine noise

Is it rattling or pinging? Either way, I don't hear anything close to that in my 2003. Try using a higher octane and see if it goes away. If so, then try a better brand of gas (Texaco, Amaco, etc) at 87. I've had a few times when I've gone to "off" gas stations (Hess, Circle K, Speedway, etc) where the brand of gas made a huge difference.

It is a rattling. I have had two other TB both of them 2003's and neither of them had this problem. I need to fill up the tank tomorrow so I am going to BP to fill up. So I will see. Thanks

Re: 2004 Engine noise

Yes I have the exact same noise. Does it at about 2,500 rpm in 1st and 2nd gear. I have been under mine a few times trying to locate it. also a 04' and been doing it since we got it. I should call the dealer, but i hate bringing my cars in unless I really have to. Please give update if you find the problem.

Re: 2004 Engine noise

I'd guess it's a balance shaft in the engine. Suspect the dealer will give you a "considered normal, does not affect reliability" song. Those shafts rock and roll and if there's any play at all in the drive it will rattle some.

Re: 2004 Engine noise

My 2004 EXT LT had a noise that sounds exactly like yours. This is going to sound weird, but they finally found the noise and it was a vibration that came from the bar that holds up the hood. They put a rubber piece around it to stop the vibration noise. This cured the problem. Hope this helps!

Thanks i'll check it. I have been under the thing so many times. I have clamped lines and I found the metal gaurds that protect the gas tank had play in them and did make a noise if rattled. So I put rubber washers on them and was sure this was the fix. Nope.. still there. Seems to do it more when the air is on. It's my wife's and she says she really never hears it. When I drive it I hear it. I will check the hood prop and if thats not it I am taking it in.

update: I put a 3/8 inch gas line over the rod that props the hood up. Right were it was touching the fan shroud. So far haven't heard a rattle yet.

Re: 2004 Engine noise

Took the truck to the dealer today and they fixed the problem it was the hood rod touching fan cover. They adjusted the rod and I have not heard the noise
