1983 Caprice Classic
I have had a lot of trouble with my 1983 Caprice Classic lately, and every mechanic that I have gone to has not been able to fix the problem since I keep having it! And I certainly know nothing about cars... so here is the situation, and this has happened about four times.
My car starts to lose power, I can tell because the wipers get slow and the lights inside go dim. So I am told that the alternator is bad, and it's not keeping the battery charged, so the battery is going dead. Each time, I have replaced the alternator and even the battery once, and it keeps happening. Nothing I do, even buying all new alternators and batteries, keep the car from dying. It seems to be only a temporary fix to the problem, and I am not sure what could be so wrong with it that it that the alternators keep going bad, one right after the other. |

Re: 1983 Caprice Classic
I had this exact problem!!, Replace the wire(s) going to the altenator. They may look okay, but there is most likely a break in the wire that isn't visible from the outside. Also check ground to the altenator. If you are using any plastic spacers or rubber bushings to mount the altenator, don't. If you have to, make a separate ground connection. You aren't burning out your altenator, your altenator isn't getting power to the battery somehow. Check ALL connections to the altenator AND battery. If this doesn't sove your problem, then I don;t know what to tell you. Good luck!
