Tranny Problems

Ok well this in on an alero, but its the sister car to the grand am, and i was hoping if someone has advice. Alright so when i drive 0-40 mph or so it shifts fine etc etc. Whenever i got above 40...and thats often its like the clutch isnt catching. It shoots up to 4000 rpm and stays there. In order for me to keep the speed it needs to be at 4000 or so rpm. If i let it go back down to 2000 or so rpm, the car slowly looses speed. And when i hammer the gas it accelerates very slow, but this is only when im going 40 or above. If i put the cruise control on, and the car starts to slow down, it shoots to 4000 or so rpm to keep the speed.

Has anyone had a problem like this? I was told it may be the MAF sensor? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks ~ ADAM

OH BTW...its a 2000 2.4 L w/ 50k miles

Re: Tranny Problems

sounds like a shift solenoid to me. The 3-4 solenoid is not engaging completely, causing the slippage and loss of speed you describe. When you hammer it, it downshifts to 3rd, and you're fine until it tries to go into 4th

hey it also sounds like a shift solenoid to me to. i had the same problem with my car and it was the shift solenoid. to test it just unplug the solenoid electrical connector and if that solves the problem than you know its the solenoid. i unplugged mine it does no damage to your tranny what so ever.

try driving over 40 in 3rd gear instead of "D" or drive where you usually put it, if it cruises at 4000 rpm then it is probably the solenoid like they said, but i think 4000 rpm seems a little high for speeds around 40mph even if the car isnt shifting into 4th gear
