Civic tie-rods

I can't tighten my tie-rod up after taking it apart. Is there a trick to tighten it or has it gone south on me??

ok - it turns out, those bolts in the tie-rods need to turn, so it was not defective. I just needed to smack it down into the steeering knuckle a little bit and it tightened right up.
