Question Fuel Pump Lock Ring/How Do You Remove It?

Hey Iv'e been posting that my car is in need of a fuel pump. I tried installing the new BOSCH pump (pn#61075)yesterday and ran into this plastic locking ring that is a bitch to remove. You know I needed to know how to install it so I used the search bar to look for some online help along with some tips from you guys and someone here told me that there was this fastner or ring that would be trouble to remove, Well it's true and my 93' FSM (my cars a 95 G20t) suggest that a lock ring socket be used. This of course is a dealer tool! Does anybody have a suggestion here. The way it is made it looks like I could possibly use a large (truck type) oil filter wrench or a strap wrench. I could use some suggestions. It does not seem to tap loose with a screw driver.

Yep.

That ring is a BITCH.

I got it off by putting a flat blade screwdriver against the ribs and carefully tapped on the end of the hammer until is starter to move. Then I worked it by hand with a lot of, ah, magic words. :right:

You either need the tool or have some patience and tough it out. There is no simple answer. Sorry.

THANX! for the reply. I guess I haven't given the screwdriver a hard wack. That's because I'm a little self concious about the half a tank of gas sitting below me. I'm laying off the install for another week untill I get my all of the parts I ordered. I went ahead and puchased a replacment fuel pressure regulator and a gasket seal that will also need to be replaced with the pump. I also purchased two relays. If I sound like I don't know what is really wrong. That is because I don't for sure. But guess what? Neither does the dealer, And it's cheaper for me to purchase parts and figure this out than to have a dealer/mechanic ream me for hundreds of dollars. Plus I figure it's not going to hurt any to replace these parts at this stage. I have surfed the net and to your point I have found a How-To with pics of a guy replacing his fuel pump on a 95 GSX? (What ever that is) And he removes his lock ream using your same suggestion. My car is at a cross road. Iv'e never had any engine trouble or of any kind before this year so I figure It's just asking for some due time maintainance and pampering. she'll be getting a tune up at the end of the month alsong with a new front axle and control arms, high flow cat and new 5ZIGEN fireball exhaust. Check this out, this is those pics I mentioned.

you wanan replace those rubber rings as well..it's only about 8bucks from the dealer. once they are taken off (with screwdriver to carefully pry it) they get stretched and since it's alwasy in the gas tank, i heard its better to just replace them. That's what I did when i put in the Z32 fuel pump.
