An engine can backfire for a few reasons. You could have a leak in your exhaust between your headers and your muffler where oxygen can get in and mix with combustable gasses and cause a backfire.
You could have a bad seal or leak in one or more of your cylinders that causes evil terrible used exhaust to go under your piston and screw up your oil that the crankshaft is in, or even combust under the piston and screw up your oil plus MAYBE even cracking the walls, but unlikely. Could be your timing or a bad PCV valve with your I.A.C... I would do a VAC test on it to check for leaks, other than that I don't know what else to say. Im not the most intelligent person ever...haha. Or else im totally off, but these are just a few things that i've heard of making backfire happen.

Re: i need help LT1 back fire
early design LT1 opti, check for visible signs of leakge under the waterpump, there is a small hole called the weep hole, if you can see traces of coolant coming out, then i can pretty much guarantee that its the opti. but also check to see that all your plug wires are on correctly, that means in the right order, and snuggly attatched to the plugs themselves. you could have debris in an injector causing a poor air/fuel mixure in one cylender, but i think opti is most likely.
