98 escort misfiring

I have a 98 ford escort lx that is misfiring on the No. 1 cylinder. The OBDI code is PA301. It is running real rough and does not have any low end power. I thought it was a bad plug wire but have changed plugs and wires, still the same? It has 115,000 and new belts 2000 miles ago. Does anyone have any sugestions?? thanks

Did you REPLACE the plugs AND wires, or just check them? My car had NO low end power, AT ALL, it was simply plug wires.....Try resetting your computer (leave the attery disconnected for a few hours). Try putting some "HEET" into your gas too.

Yes, I replaced all 4 plugs and wires, the no. 1 is not getting fire, you can pull it off when the engine is running and it runs the same. I did reset comp. and the check engine lt. it came back on showing no fire on #1 plug.

My next move would be to try changing out your coil pack. You should be able to get one from a local junk yard. If that doesn't fix it, then I'd venture to say your ECU, but I'm not an expert. MightyMoose or Jeffescortlx might be able to help you further.

I'd say the coil pack is a safe bet... assuming that what you have already checked and replaced is true.

Did this problem begin before you first changed the plugs and wires? If it only began after changing them don't get caught up in changing a bunch of parts. Make sure your connections are good, your plugs are gapped correctly, etc.

No, I changed the plugs and wires because of the problem. I was going to change out the coil pack but I did not want to spend the $70 for nothing until I got some other info.

BTW do you know the correct spark plug gap for the escort, or a site with some specs and info.

If it a 1.9 engine the gap is .054. If it is a different engine you will have to look it up... should be easy info to find on the net.

I tried the coil pack and it is running good !!
