Got a 98 Tacoma with a stock cassette player that did work fine. Tried to put an aftermarket cd receiver in and now the stock radio or the cd player won't work. The stock radio worked perfectly before but won't even turn on now. I checked the fuses under the dash and they are good. I checked the fuses under the hood and they seem good, but don't think that any them are related to the stereo. All other accessories work fine. Tried disconnecting the negative battery terminal to reset(?) the stereo. Don't know if there is an anti-theft problem or even if the stereo is equipped with anti-theft. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Love the site by the way. Great for a new Tacoma owner.
Thanks, Matt |

I have not heard of stock radios being fitted woth anti-theft devices or codes. If yours has one it should be in the manual. I would rule that out as well as the battery.
Seems like there is an issue behind your radio with the wiring. Did you disconnect the stock radio from the power and speaker wiring to connect the CD player? Or did you just connect the CD player. My stock radio had a connection on the back for a player so I did not have to do much other than mount it and connect. |

also...unfamilar with the 98 radio...but there may be a reset button somewhere on the radio it self...the king you reset with a pen or something. Just a guess.

Thanks for the try but I took it to my local dealer and they were able to fix it. The problem? The part that holds the fuse for the radio was spread apart which was not allowing the fuse to make a good connection. The mechanic said that the fuse receivers are quite fragile (didn't know that) and I must have bent them when I was taking the fuse in and out. So it's now fixed and my Toyota dealership is $34 richer. Sucks for something that simple but I was tearing my hair out trying to do it so I guess it was worth it.
