oil shooting out the side of your block is bad...
whussup my fellow DSMers! it's been a while sisnce i have been very frequent on this board, so WHUSSSSSSUUUP to all you guy's that know me and to all the noobs, use the search button and try to keep the q's intelligent
![]() OK well i guess it was bound to happen sooner or later... here is how it all started: noticed a slight rise in the temp one day. it would rise to 3/4 on the gauge when idling and promptly reduce to normal with about 10-15 seconds @2000 rpm. i figured it may be low on the h2o. slight fill up of h2o. problem dissapears for about a week untill: i decide i want to leg my ride out and drive it to Las Vegas. just got the oil changed [15w50 mobil one] and the fluids checked and no problems. in a bit of traffic on the way there i notice the temp rise and i rev and hold it @ 2000 and it goes down, but the rise gets more persistent as the traffic prolongs. at speed the temp is fine, so as soon as traffic breaks i mach it up to the next place with a station. pop the hood, no noise or any oblivious leaks. i twist the rad cap [i bought one of those '100 terry cloth towel' bags from the walmart or somewhere and keep a bunch in the car, and i used one folded to 'crack' the cap open] to the pressure release position and it steamed like a bitch! the escaping pressure caused the water to hoplessly boil out. after it was all done and the pressure equalized i took the cap off and filled it up with water. continued the drive at very high speeds [and raced this sic RHD S-15 on the freeway, no winner, just some extremely fast driving ] and got to Vegas with no incident. checked the water before i left and it was good. drove home with no incident.fast forward a week later: overheating is more prevalaint. a nice hold @ 2000 rpm and it will reduce back to normal. also upon cooling off there is a slight hiss from around the h2o pump area, and leakage is also noticable, and it is determined to be the pump at this time. i have had them blow on me before [in other cars] and know recognize the problem. made a date to drop my ride off at RRE for a full timing belt job [the milage is close enough] and a couple other things [AEM Fuel Rail, AEM Tru-Time Cam Gears, B&M FPR, Balance Shaft Removal] Later that night: driving on the freeway home from work, temp starts to rise. at this point i have to put h20 in once a day and already did for the day. now my driving is slow and as short as possible. strictly to work. up until this point the temp has never risen while driving. i say shit because i figure that the pump has completely gone. this is also the last time i was planning on driving the car because it was thursday and i could take the my 04.5 GLI away from the girl and give her a ride to work... figures it would happen now... so now i pull over at the nearest station for some h2o. well by this point the needle has been pegged for about 2 minutes. i figure i'm OK. so when i come screaming into the station, there there are a lot of people looking at me. i jump out and pop the hood and am met with a tremendous amount of steam. i also notice that there is a huge trail behind my car and i'm shooting oil out of the block/head on the passenger side!!! i start screaming about something or other and the people at the busy station must have thought the car was going to blow... lol. so pop the rad cap after the hissing stopped and filled up the water. i droped about 3 quarts of oil right in front of my eyes, draining onto the ground. so i jumped into the car and drove home. noticed the oil pressure was slightly low for the ride. temp stayed 1/2 way. she has been parked ever since. called RRE and they said i warped my head to shit. i thought it was just the head gasket, but they think otherwise. might need a brand new one. we will see. there was no strange noises comming from it though... i'm taking her to RRE today for a major overhual. probably close to 5g what i'm looking to spend. i may just end up with a new turbo too... i'll keep it up to date on this thread... in other news, i was also supposed to be in FL last weekend... but this big ass hurricane went instead of me oh and it's my Bday on the 13th. i think my Bday is trying to kill me, fucked up shit always happens near my Bday... |

Re: oil shooting out the side of your block is bad...
When they (or you) take off the head, you'll see if it's a headgasket or warped head. I think in some cases they can machine the head, but if you are ready for a built engine, I would be looking either at a 1g head/manifold or a built one too. The car is just telling you it's time to upgrade.

Re: oil shooting out the side of your block is bad...
first of all i would like to say that the mods listed below have been on the wish list for as long as i have had the car. some are replacements that i just wanted to get all done at the same time and others are full on upgrades. i have the $$ to do it now and i gave up on my previous deilema of wether or not to dump more $$ into my ride. RRE has my full trust and support and they are REALLY great guy's over there. and they give you discounts for asking the right questions... lol...
OK here it is: Parts + labor : Upper gasket kit $140 ARP head studs $95 Factory metal head gasket $95 NGK plugs $10 Magnacore wires $79 Motor mount inserts $23 + $40 Driverside motor mount $54 Front motor mount $36 Denso 660 injectors $440 EVO B-16g turbo $640 + $200 16G Full install kit $325 S-AFC II $360 + $60 Port turbo, ex. mani, o2 housing – everything $225 Greddy 60 EGT w/ P/H $225 + $80 BG tranny fluid $29 + $10 Full timing belt parts $371 + $300 Balance shaft Removal kit $49 + $300 Oil pump & housing gaskets $10 AEM blue cam gears $320 BM fuel reg. & gauge $100 + $40 AEM fuel rail $180 Thermostat $30 Head to Machine shop for rebuild $400? Remove & install head $500 HKS cams 264, 272 $600 Total $6366.00 i'm fully OK with the labor being ~1500. the combined experience of RRE puts me WAY at ease. besides that is a long list of parts to be putting in. i also have some GReddy Rad. hoses and a 3 gauge A-pillar going in too. so critique and give me some feedback and tell me what you think of my choices.. |

Re: oil shooting out the side of your block is bad...
the big question is where do you draw the line for a daily driver [for me anyways]
and now that i got it i will most likely be making some apearances at the track. but keep in mind that this is also FWD. so that also entails that my clutch is next to go. then there is a question about LSD. and also fresh in my mind is a full coilover job. but we will see. i'm getting a 60mm peak/warn EGT and comming soon after is going to be a 60mm Boost and 60mm Oil Press [both peak/warn]. and i can't sit still thinking about getting on a dyno

Re: oil shooting out the side of your block is bad...
the t belt is a pretty major job with everything else that goes along with it. but even with all that removed and taken apart that is only about 1/3 of the way to getting the to the b. shaft. also doing the balance shaft frees up a hand full of horses and is supposedly some very good preventative measure. the guy's at RRE said it is one of the first things they do when they get in a new 4g63 [think CW and oil relations]. and like i said before, it is only 1500 for a list of 26 objects, some of those that are multiple things. mabey i'm just trying to justify the cost of labor, but i don't think it is too bad... lol

Re: oil shooting out the side of your block is bad...
depending on if you warped your head or not from the overheating, you might have warped it beyond fixing, in that case i'd just buy a built head w/a valve job, oversize valves, cams and gears and all the other goodies. good luck man

Re: oil shooting out the side of your block is bad...
Moral of the story? You can "rent" a coolant system pressure tester for free at some auto parts chains (autozone for one). Pump that bitch up to 20 psi, and if it has a leak you'll find it. I had a leak that would show up at normal system pressure (~14 psi), but when the car was at high rpm and the pump drove the pressure up a little (17 psi IIRC) a heater hose would open right up and piss out coolant. From then on I dont hesitate, just get the tester and be rid of the problem.
The oil leakage is a concern though. Hopefully no other damage was done in that regard.

Re: oil shooting out the side of your block is bad...
ya there was a full on dump from the water pump, coming out exactly where it is located. as for the oil i was more worried about a fire, there was that much shooting out the side! but that is really great info about the coolant system pressure tester! learn new stuff all the time!
aight i'm off to florida, hopefully Ivan will not keep me there for an extra week! |
