Got Jeep looked at..does this sound right?

I little while back I posted a message that I was having problems with my 98 Jeep Wrangler with 47000 miles on it. It was regarding what I thought to be the engine sputtering. It doesn't matter what the weather, how much gas, what speed I am going or what gear I am in, the jeeps just feels like it is going to stall. When I press on the gas petal the rpm's don't go up a all, it just doesn't go any faster. When it is completely stopped it sounds and feels like the jeep is going to stall but it doesn't. I will just be driving and the it starts bucking and won't go any faster. I brought it into the dealer to get looked at and they told me to replace the rotor, caps and some wires. $500 (after the $80 diagnosis charge) I paid the $80 but didn't get the other parts fixed that they recommended. It just didn't sound right to me and I really don't like going to mechanics. It always seems like when I go and then my dad goes it's not exactly what they told me was wrong. Does this sound right? With only 47000 miles it doesn't seem like things should be wearing already to me, and of course nothing was covered on the warranty. I am thinking of getting a second opionon, just wanted to get some imput? Can anyone shed some light on it? Should I spend the $500. They told me that this might not even be the problem, I would hate to spend it and it not get fixed. The fuel pump has been replaced already, someone said to check the fuel filter? Any thoughts? Thanks!

Yes, if you changed your fuel pump, you SHOULD change the fuel filter. As far as your cap, rotor, and wires go. Take off the cap, look into the cap at the contacts. Is there alot of carbon build-up on the contacts, is the rotor pitted were it contacts the cap contacts. If this is true, replace your cap and rotor, fairly inexpensive. Would recommend going with the brass contacts versus the aluminum. Your wires(spark-plug), are they hard, brittle? If so replace with a set of Bosch wires and put in a set of bosch platnuim plugs, these plugs are pre-gapped, just open the box and install. This should get you running down the road much better than late. Believe it or not, you are at the point, milage, that it would be time to replace the cap, rotor, wires, and plugs. Good luck.
By the way, are you getting any "service engine soon" light?

I agree,replace you cap,rotor,wires, and plugs.
I disagree about brand however....
Go to the Jeep parts department and get factory parts. If you do not put Champion plugs in it, it will run like SH_T. Do not assume any plug is pre gapped, always check them before you put them in, no matter what brand you end up putting in ! You would be amazed how many sets of plugs , let alone the other 3 parts we have taken off someones Jeep in the last ten years.
Jeeps need tuned up ( plugs anyway ) every 30k miles , no matter what anyone says.
Just my 2 cents.....

Re: Got Jeep looked at..does this sound right?

Just a simple FYI. The Platnuims I mentioned were in my 4.0 Xj for over 50K, never had a problem, only replaced becuase of milage, not performance. I have had bad run ins with the Champion plug. Thier great for lawn mowers and such. I have been told on more than one occasion that the platnuim plugs are pre-gapped, if you were to try and gap them, you'll mess up the electrode. Yes, always check the gap on any other type of plug but the platnuim type, wether its bosch or autolite.

After the mechanic did the tune-up, changed the wires ext, he said it still did it but now the service engine soon light is on. Any new thoughts?
