Cooling Fan Problem

I just acquired a '94 Acclaim 2.5l for my daughter. After the car is running for about 3 minutes after a cold start the radiator fan turns on and the check engine light comes on - code is '22' - cooling fan fault. I've changed the coolant temp sensor - no change - any thoughts?
