Question 1999 Silverado Fog Light Installation

Hey guys,
I went through all of the posts regarding "Fog Light" installs on these vehicles but, I just wanted to double check that if I add a Set of lights to my truck that it won't trip anything?

I've always wired Fogs on my truck separately. Just pick a switched 12V source and used a relay and I've always had success. With all of the friggin computers on board my truck I wanted to make sure it didn't effect anything.

I bought the factory install kit and after reading the directions that came with it I thought; Hey why use the factory setting, pay the Dealer $46 (Can) to program my BCM and monkey with the Electrical center and everything else. Only to have the lousy fog light switch and only to have them come on with my low beams. If I wire them seperately I can have them on anytime.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 1999 Silverado Fog Light Installation

I did the same as you. Bought the stock lights to keep a clean look, then wired a Hella switch with a stock looking amber LED. Hooked the input on the relay to turn the lights on with the parking lights. Works great and looks stock.

Re: 1999 Silverado Fog Light Installation

Do you think I can do the same with daytime running lights? mine is a 2000 and it only has an empty space in there, itīs an export truck so the running lights were not mandatory.

Re: 1999 Silverado Fog Light Installation

The negative wire on your low beams (coming off the bulb) is a positive when the headlights is off. You could hook that wire into a relay to trigger daytime running lights to be on when the headlights are not on. Might work kinda sweet for you Silveradodoman.

Re: Re: 1999 Silverado Fog Light Installation

i have an 04 extcab silverado with no foglights and i want to buy the kit from the dealer or have them do it or something. im not much of a handyman but i basically want the foglights with an in-cab switch so i can turn them on and off when i want. how much does a kit like this cost or how much would it cost to buy it then have the dealer do it? thanks for any suggestions.

Re: 1999 Silverado Fog Light Installation

I bought the stock kit for just under 100 bucks off gmpartsdirect.com. You have to either wire in your own switch, or have the dealership program the BCM to work the stock switch. I would guess they would charge you 75-150 for the install, plus another 150 for the part to have it all done by them. I bought my stock lights online, then hooked up a small Hella rocker switch with an amber LED that looks like a stock switch. Good luck.

Re: 1999 Silverado Fog Light Installation

Update:

Well I just finished installing my stock lights that I bought from the dealer. $140 Canadian. Bought a nice $3 switch from Radioshack and had a relay kicking around the shop. Got it all wired in and I must say I am pretty happy with the final product. Installed my Radioshack S/W and found an Ignition activated lead in the Fuse panel by the door and it all works perfectly. Didn't bother with an LED indicator as I figure I'll know if I have them on or off.

The nice part about this, is that I saved $50 from having the dealer program the BCM and I can have them on with the High and Low Beams. If you buy the stock kit you don't have to be a wizz kid to install it. It's really straight forward. The only tricky part is finding a hole to go through the firewall.

Anybody want a factory Cargo/Fog light switch for 99' Silverado. I'll never use it....

Re: 1999 Silverado Fog Light Installation

Ok..Now my question. If I buy and install a set of these fog lights, and wire it up myself so the dealer doesn't burn a hole in my pocket, is there any waythe factory switch will work?? I really like the inside of my truck to look as factory as possible.

Sorry but that's not true.. I bought the factory kit off of E-bay and installed them and had the Dealer reprogram the BCM and they work anytime the parking lights or the head lights are on only cost 46 bucks at my dealer. The dealer has option codes when they reprogram the BCM which is either parking light or head light postion for the power up of the lights.

So if they are wired off the park lights do they stay on with your highbeams? I didn't know that the dealer could program them more than one way. Most vehicles are set to turn the fogs off after the high beams have been turned on. Anyways, The way I did it saved my 46 bucks.

Jeverett:
I wanted to use the factory switch as well but it's just a momentary contact switch and couldn't be used. I guess if a guy was to rip the switch apart and fix it inside with the workings of another switch you may get it to work.

Re: 1999 Silverado Fog Light Installation

I'd try to do it myself, I'm positive that I can, but I don't have an extra switch available to tear into.

Re: 1999 Silverado Fog Light Installation

silveradoman: I believe the neg. low beam headlight wire is not hot when the key is off, so the daytime running lights wouldnt be on when the truck was off either.... BUT... it might become positive again with the highbeams on... just meaning the running lights would come on with the highbeams... no biggie though right?

Jeverett: I tried to rebuild my factory switch too... it wont work. its not a switch, its a momentary pulse button. Check out Hella's website. Actually... here is the link the the exact switch i put in. It looks very very stock. even has the same amber led that the heater has: http://www.hella.com/produktion/Hell...LED_Rocker.jsp

Re: 1999 Silverado Fog Light Installation

Jeverett: I forgot... I modified the stock cargo light box to have that Hella switch in it. So the foglight switch is in the stock location.
