1998 escort lx gear shift light

hi i hope that someone can help me the letters on my gear shift on my car does not light up when i have my lights on at night so i have to say park ect to make shure im in right gear it is a floor shift if you could please tell me if there is a bulb that needs to be changed and where it is i would appreciate it

first check your dimmer switch, if you have one. Do the rest of your dash lights brighten and dim?

Yes, there is a bulb and you will have to take apart the center console around the shifter to get to it. It is a fairly simple operation and just about anyone with a screwdriver should be able to do it.
