Question system not charging

Replaced alternator, voltage reguator and battery, and still the charging system is not charging the battery, i can make short runs and be fine. If I make a long run it runs only on the battery. And suggestions would be greatly appericated.

first thing i would check is to see if you have battery voltage on the large red wire to the alternator . you could have a broken wire .you changed the batt. so i sure you cleaned the terminals.

Re: system not charging

Make sure you have a good ground from your engine block to the chassis.

That would be a bad connection you would look for if the complaint was that the car sometimes or just wont start. (Not trying to be a jerk, just carifying).

Now, how do you know that the system is charging for those short trips? Are you positive that it is charging at all? You could have a bad altenator. I have gone thrue 4 altenators on a deisel before I got a good one. Those altinators drove the oil pump, 3 leaked, and none of them charged. Finally the fourth one charged and was leak free.
Back to your problem, the quickest and easiest way I know to tell you to see if the altenator is charging would be to pull the negative battery cable while the engine is running. If it stays running then it is charging. If the car dies you probably have a bad altenator. Otherwise there is something wrong with the wiring or the way you hooked it up. Make sure the wires on the stud are tight and that the pug is in good with no corosion. Also dont tighten the wires too tight or you will break the terminal loose inside the altenator and be forced to rebuild or replace the new altenator. Best of luck to you. Let us know if you need anything else.

thats true it is possible you good a bad alternator out of the box. however cobra does have a point i ve seen bad grounds do some crazy stuff. cadilacs had a tsb for cleaning the grounds to cure a rough idle but the car would start every time
