well boys, i'm now officially a part of the Z family! picked me up a "beater" 86 n/a 300zx today. approx 159k miles on it, engine runs like new. altho, in light of all this, she needs some work done to her.... second gear isn't happy at all, she grinds if you try and shift into it with the rpm's over 1500, i'm thinking the syncro's are done for, the brake light's on (one on the dash) i'm thinking that's cause the left rear brake is slightly gripping on the rotor, something to do with the e-brake, hood's got a fair dint in it, nothing that won't pop out real easy, tiny bit of rust here and there, but for $922 us i'd say i got a pretty goooood deal, didn't get a key for the t tops, any idea how to get those guys open? need the master key or something? i'm not too sure why i didn't get the master key, but oh well.... any questions or comment, i'll be damn happy to answer

Well Wes was smoking crack, the other kids were learning math. But thats a seperate issue.

Check your brake fluid level, 9 out of 10 times thats why you'll get a dash light.

The grind into 2nd is probably from the previous owner jamming the gears at high rpms. Take it easy on the shifts and it shouldn't be a problem.

I had a problem with my E brake in the 240 that sounded familar. The e brake on it used a rachet system with a threaded drum that screwed out to put pressure on the rotor. Somehow the drum had screwed all the way out and was lodged against the rotor. Had to buy a rebuild caliper and a new rotor but it was like 300 bucks total so no big deal.

Z32s don't use the rear disc brakes for the e brake. They have a small drum brake inboard of the discs that hold the car in place. Probably the drum brakes need new linings or perhaps its just a simple matter of adjustment.

Heres a FAQ on ebrake adjustment: http://twinturbo.net/ttnetfaq/FAQpages/prknbrake.html

Rock on...you got a Z31...good for you! If the car's been taken care of even remotely well, it'll go for another 159K.

Second gear issue: I wouldn't worry about it too much, either. My beater Celica does that cuz the synchro is shot...it will even pop out of gear if you let off the gas in second gear...so I hold onto it... Just take it easy on the Nascar style speed shifting.

Brake light: Add brake fluid. Little reseviour [sp.] right in front of the firewall on the driver's side. When you add it, see if you notice it coming out anywhere...I had a leaking caliper on my old 300 and didn't notice it until I noticed my rim looked wet...it was brake fluid. FYI...brake fluid cleans rims up VERY well.

You don't need a key to get the T-tops out unless someone locked it. You could probably get a replacement key from courtesy nissan if it is in fact locked, but I've never looked. You just have to push the little sliding thing up and pull on the handle. If it won't budge, it's probably locked. First few times taking them in or out is pretty tricky...I've gotten to the point where I can take them out sitting at a stop light without taking my seat belt off...

Re: w00t

brake light went off.... but i gots a story for y'all!!! gather round!
uh yeah anyway.... ok, so the drivers side doesn't lock... no big deal, every time you open the door after driving for a while or attempting to lock it the alarm goes off, i'll get it fixed when i get the car back to k-town and i have a nice warm garage to work in, Anyway... important part of the story, so i'm moving the car from round back to up front of the grandparents house, so i get up, park the car, open the door, alarm goes off... whatever, hurredly get out, go to *unlock* the door which disarms it stick the key in, or so i thought... go to turn it, and come away with the end of the key in my hand, about a third of the other key sitting in the lock... so i run swearing into the house to grab a tool to pull the rest of the key out, pull it out, wait however many min. till the alarm stops going off, call a locksmith... locksmith makes a few keys and goes away.... it was awesome only having one key for the car... don't have the master key anymore, the previous owner musta lost it somewhere or still has it.. (got the car from an auction so they're unable to give us the name of the seller according to some privacy act) anyway, i just hope i can make the 8 hour drive home without pulling a broke as ****.... is there any quick easy fix to unbind that left rear brake? smells pretty funny after driving a while, needs new brake rotors, or maybe just to turn these ones.

nother funny story concerning the transmission issue.... anyway, my dad goes to take it for a drive and i forgot to tell him to take it easy going into second.... anyway, as i see him driving away, i remember i forgot to tell him about it, so just as i hear the gas let off, i hear this really loud KKKKKKKKKKTTTTTTTTT..."summbitch!!!" i had to have a laugh

oh, and i added some brake fluid, light went off like you guys said, thx

I remember learning REAAAAAAAL FAST how the alarm works when I got my first 300. I didn't even know it HAD an alarm until I opened my driver's door after leaving work the night I got it. The locks are really cool...if you just push it locked then close the door, it'll bump the lock open so you can't lock the keys in the car, but it'll still arm the alarm. This is why my alarm went off that night.

You mean the driver's door doesn't UNlock? If it didn't lock, the alarm would never get activated to begin with. Even if it didn't lock, I don't think the alarm would go off every time you open the door until the end of time. Sounds a little odd.

LOL.......you said "sumbitch"........and *I* live in Kenfucky....lol...

HEY YOU KNOW WHAT! SCREW YOU!

Anyway sounds like the worst that can happen is you have to get a caliper and rotor for the affected corner. Not that bad. If it smells like burnt brakes then thats probably the issue.

Re: w00t

no no, it's permanently UNlocked for the time being, so it won't lock
alright what i think is going on with the lock is, it's going just far enough to hit the "locked" arming switch for the alarm, but not actually locking, like there's a piece of something broken off in there preventing the rod from going all the way and enguaging(sp?) the lock

yeeeees llz, those are called dummy locks! they help dummies like you to not lock the keys in your car just playin man

any idea what i could do to fix the transmission... second gear is kind of important.... you know, if i ever wanna... go fast off the line

Look around, you can probably get a rebuilt trans for a couple hundred bucks. Alot easier then getting yours rebuilt (which is what it needs). Alot cheaper too.

Re: w00t

what sorta transmissions would bolt up to my beast, would it have to be a z31 n/a tranny? or could it be say... z32 n/a....
as for getting my tranny rebuilt, why would it be more difficult than finding a new one.... where i live, there aren't many salvage yards, nor 300zx's, taking it to nissan would cost an arm and a leg, so i'm thinking a reputable transmission shop?
on a side note, i ordered a catalogue from victoria british about a week ago, hopefully it'll have arrived by now... i doubt they'd have anything in there transmission wise eh?
