Humming
Whenever I drive at lower speeds my 2000 impala hums. Its a recent problem, and I was wondering what it could be. Its coming from under the hood and only while driving downhill/ lower speeds. I love this car and Its been very dependable. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also there is a slight shimmy when I brake.
Thanks |

Re: Humming
I would say you have a hub bearing going bad. You don't hear it at higher speeds because road noise drowns it out

We have replaced a hub bearing on our 01 Imapala as well. It gradually got louder and louder. I described it to the shop as a "mud tires" sound, because it became higher pitched as we drove faster. They were able to identify which side it was on by driving the car and turning. For instance: If you turn to the right and the noise stops, its the right hub bearing, because all the weight has shifted to the left side of the car.
If yours stops when you turn both directions, I would also check out the power steering pump too. |
