Post timing parts for 3800

i have a 1988 bonniville with a 3800 ho i threw the timming chain and replaced it on the cam gear there was a plug like piece with a metal strip it came out in pieces and i kneed it to get the timming right does anyone know the name or part number of this piece ???

Was it very small, and from the top sprocket? (the key)
It might have been the timing chain damper, which bolts to the block on the left side of the chain, miday between the two sprockets.

Perhaps a repair manual borrowed from the local library would be most helpful.
There may be an exploded diagram, that you can use to determine what you have, and what is missing.
