b20b+b16a head durable?
hi i am new here..i know there might be someone post this question before but i would really wanna know in detail is this kind of engine modification is durable?Some of my frens said this combination will have problems a short period of time(3 months).I have tested this monster and i admit it is really fast and it evens beats my ex-4g63t engine swap to a mirage.I currently driving a EK3 with d15b engine and i plan to swap.I need something that powerful and durable!
my choice: -CRV block with b16a head--powerful but durable??? -b18c R<<--this is very expensive in my country! pls help thanks. p/s=my friendd's b20b+b16a head are using 85mm piston not 84.5mm.any different??? |

Well any kind of hybrid engine is going to have a problems, its jsut the way it is. YOu have to remember that your making up a combination that was never ment to be. For the B16a head to work properly on the B20 block it needs to have the combustion chamber machined out, which of course weakens it a little. And the B20 bottom end and block needs to with stand revs quite far above what it was designed for to make the most of the VTEC.
Then you also have to make sure you have the right injectors so it dosnt lean out, and get the cam and ingnition timeing right. Its not a simple build the engine, stick it in the car and you have a dialy driver. Its a good project for someone with the time and skills and patiance to keep it maintianed, but if your looking for a simpler bolt in swap then I recomend a B18c from a GSR/VTiR/SiR-G Integra, or a B16a from an SiR Civic. Where in the world are you?

guess what i saw today, a F20c head mated to a 2002 2.4L CRV block.
anyway, isnt the bore on the b20 the same as the b18; 81mm? |

i'm from Malaysia..the ppl playing vtec here are totally crazyy.There is one ek9 modified to 2400 cc..darn fast.I know crvtec is fast i just doubt bout its durability.So u guys mean if i tuned it and maintain it well i wont have much problems with those conversion?

Well..... the reliabiltiy depends on how well built the setup is. And the better you build it, the more $$$$ it's gonna cost ya....

You either need lots of money to pay the people with the right mechanical skills and know how to make it work properly, or you need to have the mechanical skills and know how yourself. Since you had to ask about it here it sounds like you need the former, Lots of money.
IMO its simply not worth it, you could get a similar level of performance from a modified B18c.

not true...... properly built (albeit more $$$ possibly) a CRVTEC stomps a GSR motor...... hands down.

However the B18c is designed to be high reving, and will do it all day long with little effort. If you have the money, patiance and technical skill then by all means go build a CRVTEC, but dont be surprised if it dosnt work first time, because it won't. If your short on budget, time and technical know how, then stick with simple swaps that are well proven, well documented and fairly common. like the B18c, or B16a swap.
