What is a DOT racing tire?
where do you buy them?

The term refers to tires that meet the minimum requirements for street usage, but are designed to be used for racing puposes, in particular racing series that require these types of tires.

While they are legal for the street, they may be completely inappropriate for street usage.

They are generally manufactured with minimal tread depth - in some states illegal depths even when new.

They are sticky, but don't wear very well. We're talking may be a couple of hundred miles, not thousands.

They are expensive compared to regular street performance tires.

They are more prone to road hazards.

Where to buy? You have to get them from a distributor of racing tires. Tire Rack does carry some.

A word of advice: If you aren't racing, you shouldn't use them!

I am trying to build a car I can drive to the track and race sounds like I need an extra set of wheels and tires.

You should probably check with folks who are racing in the same class you are.

When I was racing my ITA car (SCCA), it only took one race for me to realize that driving to the track was out of the question.
