Its been here since the inception of the IRS

This may be voluntary for now, but that’ll probably change by the end of the decade – kind of like wearing seatbelts.

Interesting. It has potential but like anything else it can be used for bad purposes.

I wouldn't doubt it becomes mandatory in my lifetime.

i don't know i kinda like the idea if the guy in charge isn't a crook. it would make it much easier to get your claims without having to go through a lengthy court case. plus i would help get those stupid god damn drivers off the road. the guys who fly through a school zone 75 kmph (about 46 mph).

Seems like a violation of privacy. As soon as they would go into affect, so would the code breakers figuring a way out to bypass it.

LOL i just posted this but i saw you got to it before me.

anyway....

From reading the article i think its a bunch of bs because the data recorded is not complete. How do they know that i did not just slam my brakes to avoid an accident instead of racing in to a corner, or how do they know if i just went WOT because I'm drag racing or just entering a freeway and the onramp is short.

Re: Big Brother is coming...oh wait...it's here!

This kind of equipment has existed in crude form for over 20 years in Europe. It is mandatory for all heavy trucks and buses to be fitted with a tachograph, a device that records the speed and hours driven.Other similar initiatives are on-board camcorders that focus on the driver and what he can see.
Like most people,I think it's the 'other guy' who needs to be monitored.I wouldn't want one in my car.I'd rather have a GPS hooked up to be able to recover the car quickly in case of theft.

I don't like the idea. I hope they never make it mandatory. I'm a safe driver, but still...

Re: Big Brother is coming...oh wait...it's here!

We already have air bag computers that store crash info which the insurance companies can view to determine fault in an accident.

We already have Onstar telephones in cars that car be monitored by the FBI or CIA.

We already have a computer that parents of children drivers can have installed to monitor them and their driving habits.

This is nothing new just the next step. My only problem with this is that even the safest driver in the world can get into an accident.

Re: Big Brother is coming...oh wait...it's here!

ITS IN USE.

"black boxes" have been in use in every Holden commodore sold in the last 5 years or so.
Insurance co's dont have access to them as yet they are just for holden/safety research...privacy laws i think...

NOW as most of you are now thinking you don't have to worry about it, what's a commodore? The Holden Commodore is sold globally (except the U.S) as the Chevy Lumina, the two door variant, the Monaro, is sold within the U.S as a Pontiac GTO, and i would not be surprised if it too was fitted with the "black box" ..i think its part of the ECU/EMS so unless someone picked it up they probably wouldn't bother taking it out of the export models...
