I jsut picked up a 91 Trooper(V6, 5spd) with 153K miles on it. The engine was replaced around 30K mi back and the tranny about 20K mi back. What are the things i shud look at and replace as part of regular maintenance ? i had heard that the timing belt had to be changed religiously, the PO doesnt know when it was done the last time. do u know how much it will cost to get the timing belt changed ?
TIA, Rahul. |

Hey bud, the rule of thumb I have always followed is replace the T-belt every 50K. An educated guess on cost is about $250 depending on where you are. It is however, a good Sunday afternoon project if you feel up to it and have a manual on hand. The belt will probably run about $50. JT |

Re: things to look for in '91 Trooper
Hey buddy,
The V6 has a timing chain, not a belt. The 4 cylinder has a timing belt they recommend changing every year I believe. My 90 V6 auto has 235k on it, and most of the car is the original parts. Seems to be a pretty basic, straightforward engine. Pay attention to brakes, 4wd system, and normal peculiar noises. Micah |
